KIEKMAIDEN is a parish occupying
a great portion of the western limb or
peninsula of Wigtownshire, projecting into
the Irish Sea, with Luce Bay on the east,
and tapering to a point, inclining eastward.
This parish, which is in Wigtownshire
poor combination and Stranraer small debt
court district, comprehends the most
southerly district of Scotland, and is about
12 miles in length and from 1J to 3 miles
in breadth ; it still has a wild appearance,
but produces good crops of corn and
potatoes, and has a very large number of
dairy farms. The coast is generally bold,
and indented by caves. On both sides
of the peninsula, however, there are several
good anchoring grounds. There is a toler-
able harbour at Drummore, in Luce Bay, on
the east coast, where the coast guard has
a station, under the command of a chief
boatman. Saimon and cod fishing is carried
on at Drummore. The church, a plain
edifice, is near the centre of the parish, not
far from Drummore Bay, and 6 miles from
the Mull of Galloway, 35 south-west from
Wigtown, 36 south-west from Newton
Stewart, 20 south-east from Stranraer, and
16 south-east from Portpatrick station on
the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire railwav.
On the estate of Andrew Kenneth M'Doua'll
esq. of Logan, is a fish pond, hewn out of
the solid rock, and having communication
with the sea by means of an ingeniously
contrived iron grating. The parish of
Kirkmaiden has an area of 13,675 acres;
rateable value, £13,006; population in 1891,
2,192, and in 1901, 1,943.
Drummore is a village about one mile east
from Kirkmaiden. The population in 1901
was 459.
