KIRKCOLM is a parish bounded by
Loch Ryan on the east and the Irish Chan-
nel on the west, it is about 5 miles square,
and is in Wigtownshire poor combination
and Stranraer small debt court district.
The church is .pleasantly seated near the
shore of the lake, north of the bay called
the Wig. Stranraer, the nearest railway
station, 6£ miles south, is on the Glasgow
and South Western line. Corswall House is
the residence of Col. Sir David Carrick

KIRKCOWAN is a parish, village and
burgh of barony, in Wigtownshire poor
combination and Wigtown small debt court
district. It extends from north to south 15
miles, by a general breadth of about 5,
bounded on the west by the Tarf water,
which divides it from the parishes of New
Luce and Old Luce, south by Mochrum and
Kirkinner, east by the Baldenoch river,
which separates it from Penninghanie, and
north by Ayrshire. The village is on the
Tarf water, near its junction with the Bal-
denoch, 10 miles north-east from Glenluce,
8 north-west from Wigtown and 7 south-
east from Newton Stewart. The Port-
patrick and Wigtownshire Joint railway
has a station a quarter of a mile from the
village. Loch Ronald, about 1 mile long bv
three-quarters of a mile broad, is in the
parish. The church was erected in 1820:
its site, as well as the churchyard, wan
given by the late Captain W. C. Hamilton.
of Craiglaw. There are woollen factories
adjoining the villa gp. belonging respec-
tively to Messrs. William Armstrong and
Son Limited and Mr. WiUSam Milroy, which
furnish employment to many of the inhabi-
tants. The principal hotM is the " Com-
mercial." The surface' of this district is
various, consfisting of moorland interspersed
with pieces' of arable land. Acreage of the
parish, 35,864; rateable value, £9,505;
population in 1901, 1,153, of which 600
were returned for the" village.
