in the parish of Farr, and includes the
following districts or townships : Halla-
dale and Porsinard, Melvich, Portskerra,
Baligill, Strathy East and "West, Strathy
Point, Millburn, Brawl, Aultiphurst, Led-
nagullin and Armadale. The population in
1901 was 679.

TONG-TJE is a parish, in the north
central part of the county, and divided
into two for about half its length by the
Kyle of Tongue, a deep inlet of the sea on
the north coast, off which lies the Island
of Roan, which is also included in this
parish. The parish is 18 miles in length
from north to south by about 9 broad, and
has on its eastern side the large loch of
Laoghal, 5 miles long : the parish is
bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the
north, ihe parish of Farr on the east and
south, and Durness on the west; it is in
the small debt court district of Tongue and
the poor combination of Sutherland. The
parish is watered by the rivers Borgie and
Kinloch, together with lochs Laoghal,
Derry, Meadie, and many small lakes ; it
is also very mountainous, Ben Hutick being
1,340 feet, and Laoghal 2,504 feet above
the sea level. The village of Tongue lies
on the east side of loch Laoghal, 5 miles
from its mouth, and has a comfortable
hotel. A small debt court ia held at
Tongue village twice a year. The area
comprises 81,037 acres ; rateable value,
£3,806; the population in 1891 was 1,925,
and in 1901, 1,783, including 67 on Roan
Island.
