GOLSPIE is a parish and village— the
latter, situated on the Moray Firth, 8 miles
north of Dornoch, 16 north from Tain and
15 east of Lairg, has a station on the main
line of the Highland railway, and there is
another station at Mound on the south
boundary of the county; the parish, which
is in the small debt court district of Dornoch
and poor combination of Sutherland, is 8
miles from east to west by 6 deep, and is
bounded north by Clyne, west by Bogart
and south • by Dornoch. The great par-
liamentary road passes through the village,
in which there are branches of the Town
and County Bank Limited, and the British
Linen Company's Bank. The pier was
constructed at a cost of £2,000, defrayed
by the County Council. The parish church,
a small building, erected in 1619, stands
within a well enclosed burial ground, sur-
rounded by trees; and at the west end
of the village is the United Free Church.
To the north of the village stands Dun-
robin Castle, the seat of the Duke of
Sutherland E.G. lord lieutenant of the
county. It is known to have existed in
the 12th century, and, according to old
historians, it was even long before that
period the family fortalice of the ancient
Thanes and Earls of Sutherland, tradition
fixing the date of erection as 1098. Mal-
colm Caenmore (1057-1093) bestowed the
title of earl on the then Thane of Suther-
land, and William the 4th earl married
the lady Margaret, daughter of King
Robert Bruce : the castle is a massive
edifice of fieestone, with turrets, in the
Scottish style ; its hi gh-pitched roofs
and turret caps giving it the appearance
of a French chateau : at one angle is a
tower over 100 feet in height, with an
arched gateway leading into the court-
Yard : the grand staircase of polished
her visit in 1842, and a good collection
of pictures and a museum; the gardens
are large and well laid out: the mountain
called Ben-Bhraggle, towers over all to
the height of 1,300 feet, and upon its
summit is a lofty monument to a former
Duke of Sutherland, and near the village
a memorial has been erected to the late
Duchess, raised by subscription. The Duke
of Sutherland K..G. is the principal land-
owner. The area comprises 19,090 acres;
rateable value, £6,882, including £2,709
for village of Golspie; the population in
1891 was 1,451, and in 1901, 1,665, in-
cluding 1,024 in the village.
Backies is a small village in this parish.
