STEATHBLANE is a parish deriv-
ing its name from the vale of the river
Blane, which pursues a north-western
course through it; the land of this valley
is exceedingly fertile, and the hills are
clothed with natural woods; the parish
lies in the south-western part of the
county and is 5 miles in length from north
to south and about 4 wide, and bounded
on the east by the parish of Campsie, on
the south by Baldernock, south-west by
the Allander river, which separates it
from East Kilpatrick in Dumbartonshire,
and on the west and north by Killearn, and
is in the small debt court district of
Lennoxtown. The village stancts at the
junction of the roads from Glasgow and
Kirkintilloch through Aberfoyle to Loch
Katrine, and has a station on the Glasgow
and Aberfoyle branch of the North British
railway, and is 10 miles north from Glas-
gow, 20 west from Falkirk and 7 north-
west from Kirkintilloch. About 2 mile;
to the west is Dnntreath Castle, the seat of
Sir Archibald Edmonstone bart. D.L. and
£ mile south-west is Mugdock Castle, the
property of the Duke of Montrose K.T. but
now occupied by J. A. Beid esq. ; Craig-
end Castle, in a small park, is the seat of
Sir Eric Alexander Buchanan bart. Sir
A. Edmonstone bart. D.L. Sir E. A. Bu-
chanan bart. D.L., J.P. Allan Graham-
Barns-Graham esq. D.L., J.P. of Craigal-
lian, the Duke of Montrose K.T. John C.
Graham esq. and Andrew Jameson esq.
are the principal landowners. Acreage,
9,085; rateable value, £16,000; population
in 1891, 1,671, and in 1901, 590.
Blanefield is a village, about 1 mile west
from Strathblane, with a station on the
Glasgow and Aberfoyle branch of the North
British railway.
