KIPPEN is a parish in Dumbarton poor
combination and small debt court district of
Stirling, 8 miles in length by from 2 to
4 in breadth, and bounded on the north
by the river Forth, which separates the
county from Perthshire, on the east hy Gar-
gunnock, on the south by Balfron and Fin-
try, and' on the west by the parish of
Drymen ; It Ib well watered, and from some

of the higher grounds an extensive and
varied prospect, including Stirling Castle
and the romantic woody eminences adjacent,
is presented. Under the provisions of the
" Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889 "
(52 and 53 Vict. c. 50, sections 44 to 50),
boundary order No. 13, the part of Kippen
parish formerly in Perthshire has been
transferred to Stirlingshire. The village is
in the eastern part of the parish, on the
road from Stirling to Dumbarton, and has
a station 1£ miles north on the Stirling arid
Balloch section of the North British railway,
and is 10 miles west from Stirling. Mineral
wells are in the neighbourhood. A quarry
of red stone is also near the village. Fairs
are held at Kippen on the second Wednes-
day in December, and at Balgair, a moor
about 2 miles from Kippen, for horses,
cattle and sheep, on the Friday before the
26th June. Near the railway station is the
Ford of Frew, where, in 1746, Prince Charles
lost his cannon, while retreating before the

clesiastical parish, 968. Cauldhame and
Sbirgarton are places in the civil parish.
