FINTBY is a parish pleasantly situa-
ted to the north of the Campsie Fells, in
the small debt court district of Stirling,
â– extending from east to west 6 miles, and
in breadth, from north to south, averages
about 5 miles ; it is bounded on the
north by Balfron and Gargunnock,
on the east by St. Ninians and
Kilsyth, on the south by Campsie and on the
â– west by Killearn. The village is 7 miles
west from Balfron station on the Stirling
and Balloch section of the North British
railway, and 8 north from the Lennoxtown
station on the Glasgow and Aberfoyle line
of the same railway, and is 41 miles west
from Edinburgh, 16 west-south-west from
Stirling and 18 north from Glasgow. Both
the Endrick and the Carron rivers have
their source in this district, and in their
•coarse through it form several romantic
falls, among which is the Loup of Fintry,
a cataract of the Endrick descending 91
feet; and on the Carron is another of about
113 feet, called the " Auchinlily Linn
Spout." Near the village of Fintry is a hill
called the *' Doon," on which is a range of
perpendicular basaltic columns, some 50 feet
in length. Bin Mountain, 1,870 feet high,
and Stroned, 1,676 feet, are in the parish.
