BANNOCKBtTBlT is a small town
and quoad sacra parish erected from the
civil parish of St. Ninians, 1 mile from
that place, on the road from Falkirk to
Stirling, and on both sides, but chiefly on
the east bank of the Bannockburn rivulet,
which here runs through a glen, and after
a course of a few miles falls into the
Forth. It has a station half a mile east
on the Glasgow and Stirling section of the
Caledonian railway, and is 3 miles south
from Stirling and 8 north from Falkirk.
The manufacture of tweeds, tartans, and
carpets is carried on. Coal is obtained in
the vicinity in great abundance, and a
tannery has been established in the village
for a long period. In this district the
country ia characterised by its long de-
scending braes, with a northern exposure
to the Firth of Forth, and it was on one of
ae uplands, between this village and
that of St. Ninians that was fought on
the 24th June, 1314, the memorable and
decisive battle of Bannockburn ; the result
of which was the permanent security of
the independence of Scotland. In this
conflict the army of the English, under
Edward II. and the Earls of Pembroke
and Gloucester, numbering about 100,000
men, attempted to relieve Stirling Castle,
BANNOCKBURN. 1355
then besieged by Eobert Bruce, but was
defeated with heavy loss, although the
Scots numbered considerably less. Bruce's
forces were stationed along the front of an
eminence called Gillies Hill, and extended
from south-west to north-east, between the
farm of Greysteil and the village of St.
Ninians. About half a mile south from
the latter, upon the summit of a command-
ing elevation called Oalden Hill, is a large
stone, termed the " Bored Stone," having
a hole in the top in which the Scottish
king inserted his standard on the day of
battle. The' height called the Cat Craig
Hill, from which the English king
watched th6 progress of the battle, has
been almost quarried away. At Milton,
about half a mile from the town of Ban-
nockburn, are the remains of " Beatons
Mill," to which James III. retreated after
the battle of Sanchieburn, fought in June,
1488, about 2 miles further to the south-
west. There is a Public Hall in the village,
erected at a cost of £1,700. The Fever
Hospital here, under the control of the
County Central District Committee, was
erected in 1895 at a cost of about £3,000,
and is now (1903) being considerably en-
larged. A fair is held in Bannockburn
on the third Tuesday in June (old style).
Bannockburn town contained a population
in 1891, 2,765, and in 1901, 2,444, and in
the ecclesiastical parish, 4,050.
Cowie is a rapidly increasing village in
the parish. The population in 1901 was
849.
