1354 AIRTH.
AIRTH is a parish in the small debt
court district of Falkirk, about 6 miles in
length by about 1J to 3 in breadth. The
ancient village stands on the banks of the
Forth, nearly opposite to Kennetpans, and
has a station, 2 miles east, on the Larbert
and Alloa branch of the Caledonian railway,
and is 27 miles weBt from Edinburgh,
between 8 and 9 south-wesb from Stirling
and 6 north-west from Falkirk. It was at
one period a place of considerable import-
ance, but is now greatly decayed. The Pow
burn, a tributary of the Forth, runs through
the centre of the parish. There are three
small ports or harbours on the Forth, into
which vessels of light burthen can enter,
and two ferries across that estuary, at
which are boats for the transport of cattle,
carriages &c. to Alloa and other places
on the Fife side. The salmon fishery is
prosecuted here with considerable success.
In the parish is an ancient tower,
of very early date, called " "Wallace's
Tower," from the circumstance of that
hero having privily entered the building,
slain the captain and one hundred men,
and released his uncle who was a prisoner ;
the tower is still in tolerable preservation.
At Dunmore is another tower, and at Dun-
more Hill, at least half a mile from the
present course of the river, an anchor was
found some years since. This place, in
1633, conferred the title of Earl on the
Grahams, Earls of Monteith ; it became
extinct in the male line on the death of
the 2nd Earl, in 1694, but the Earldom of
Menteith has several times been claimed,
though unsuccessfully. Airth Castle, the
property of the Misses Graham, but now
(1903) occupied by Robert McLaren esq.
is an elegant mansion in trie Gothic style,
standing in a park about one mile long by
naif a mile wide. Powfoulis, the seat of
Miss Dawson, is also in this parish. Dun-
more Park, about one mile long by half a
mite wide, ia the seat of the Hon. Mrs.
Henrietta Hamilton. Miss Dawson, George
Sherriff esq. of Carronvale, The Carron
Co. , G. W. Stainton esq. of Belsdyke,
C. E. Walker Ogilvie esq. of Pocknave and
the Hon. Mrs. Hamilton are the principal
landowners. The whole parish, with the
exception of the hills of Airth and Dun-
more, is a level tract, and the soil rich
and well cultivated. Acreage of parish;
5,561; rateable value, £12,061; population
in 1891, 1,325, in 1901, 1,360, of which
the village contained 558.

BALDERNOCK (anciently Bather-
nock), is a parish in the southern extremity
of the county and in the small debt court
district of Lennoxtown. It is about 3i miles
long by 2£ broad, and is bounded by the
river Kelvin and AUander on the side
fronting north-east and by Campsie, and on
the south-west lies the loch of Baldowie.
The church is about 2 miles north-west
from Balmore station, which is in the
parish, on the Glasgow and Bonnybridgo
section of the North British railway, and 7
north from Glasgow. The parish abounds
with cairns and similar memorials; the
most i-emarkable of its antiquities is a struc-
ture denominated " the auld wife's lift,"
consisting of three stones, two of which are
laid on the earth close by the side cf each
other, and on the top of this the third is
placed in the same direction, the ends in
each case pointing north and south ; the
whole is 18 feet in length by 11 in breadth
and 7 in height. In the surrounding grounds
the roots and stumps of oak trees have been
dug up, and there can be no doubt of this
spot having once been a Druidic grove and
place of sacrifice. Acreage of the parish,
4,320; rateable value, £8,949; population
in 1891, 553, and in 1901, 582.
