YELL is an island lying between the islands
of Mainland and Unst, about 2 miles south-
west of the latter, and separated from it
by Blue Mull Sound and from Mainland
(Nortbmavine parish) by Yell Sound; it
formerly comprised the parish of Mid and
South Yell and part of that of Fellar and
North Yell, but, under the "Local Govern-
ment (Scotland) Act, 1889," and by
boundary order No. 93, the whole of the
first-named parish and that part of the
parish of Fetlar and North Yell which ap-
pertained to Yell Island were united into
one parish under the name of Yell ; the
ecclesiastical divisions consist of the Old
Mid and South Yell parish and the quoad
sacra parishes of North Yell, Mid Yell and
South Yell, and the whole is in the small
debt court district of Lerwick and the
poor combination of Zetland. The village
of Mid Yell lies about 35 miles north from
Lerwick, and that of kirktown of North
Yell 10 miles further north. The area of
the civil parish is 52,129 acres; rateable
value, £3,284; the population of the entire
parish in 1901 was 2.483, composed of
1,155 in Mid Yell, 637 in South Yell, and
in North Yell.
