TJNST, the most northerly of the large
islands, and separated from that of Tell by
the Blue Mull Sound, is also a parish which
includes the islands of Balta, Muckle Flugga
and Uyea, and is in the small debt court
district of Lerwick and the poor combina-
tion of Zetland; the extent of the larger
island is 13 miles from north to south by 6
broad. At Cowiefield the juridical assem-
blies or folkthings were once held; but
these were afterwards removed to Tingwall
on Mainland. Balta Sound, about the
middle of the island, is, after Lerwick, the
second chief station of the herring fishing
in these islands ; at the head of the Sound
is the House of Buness, the residence of
Laurence Edmonston esq.; here, in 1817-8,
Jean Baptiste Biot, the French chemist
and philosopher, and Capt. Henry Eater
carried out their experiments in order to
determine the variations in the length of
the seconds pendulum, and there still exists
in the grounds of Buness two stones used
by Biot in his measurements. A rock on
the coast has a natural arch or tunnel
nearly 300 feet long, through which boats
can pass. Haroldswick is a village a little
north of Balta Sound. In 1817 chromate
of iron was found in the vicinity of Buness.
The island is well stocked with wild fowl.
The area comprises 24,498 acres; rateable
value, £5,173 ; the population of the en-
tire parish was, in 1891, 2,280, and in
1901, 1,946, smaller islands having only
6 inhabitants in 1901.
