CONVEYANCE BY WATER.
To Stromness, Aberdeen & Leith, the North
of Scotland & Orkney & Shetland Steam
the islands of Hildesay, Langa, Linga, Oxna
and Trondra, and the districts of Tingwall.
Whiteness and Weisdale on Mainland, and
in this portion is situated the large village
of Scalloway; the parish is in the small
debt court district of Lerwick and the poor
combination of Zetland. There are Estab-
lished churches in the villages of Ting-
wall and Whiteness; that at Tingwall was
rebuilt in 1805 on an ancient site at the
head of a fresh water loch about i mites
north of Scalloway. This locality, as its
name implies, was at one time the place
of meeting for the folkthing or great
assembly of the people for legislative pur-
poses. " Gallows Hill " is so called from
its having formerly been the place of
execution; the last who suffered on the
spot are said to have been two females,
who fell a sacrifice to superstition in the
17th century for the alleged crime of
witchcraft. The area of the entire parish
is 29,206 acres; rateable value, £5,847;
the population of the parish in 1891 was
2,329, and in 1901, 2,273, viz.: 195 on the
islands and 2,078 on Mainland, of which
the village of Scalloway contained 857.
The population of Tronda Island in 1901
was 151.
