MAINLAND (sometimes called Shet-
land) is the largest island, and consists of
the parishes of Delting, Dnnrossness, Ler-
wick, Nesting, Northmavine, Sandsting,
Tingwall and Walls; its length from
Tethaland Point at the northern extremity
to Sumburgh Head at the southern, is 55
' miles, and its breadth varies from 5 to 20
miles ; the total area comprises about
I 240,000 acres; its form is irregular and
j She coast much indented ; the narrow por-
tion of the island begins on the south and
runs northward for 20 miles, it then pro-
jects westward, containing the parishes of
Walls and Sandsting, the breadth at this
point being about 18 miles, subsequently
the width is reduced to 10 miles, and
trends to the east, here containing the
parish of Northmavine, which projects to
the west, and is 15 miles in extreme
length; between the two westerly projec-
tions lies St. Magnus Bay, and to the east
of the northern parish is Tell Sound,
which divides it from the island of that
name. Mainland contains the two prin-
cipal towns of the group, Lerwick and
Scalloway.

nation and the small debt court district of
Lerwick ; it includes the quoad sacra parish
