BRESSAY is an island and parish, in
Zetland poor combination and Lerwick small
debt court district, separated from Lerwick,
the capital of the islands, by the Sound of
Bressay, which is 6 miles in length, with
a breadth of from 1 to 3 miles. The
original parish comprised Bressay, Burra
and Quarff, but in 1830, Burra and Quarff
was erected into a separate parish.
Previous to the Reformation, there were
in Bressay three small churches or chapels,
viz: St. Olla's at Gunnista, St. Mary's at
Cullensbough, and St. John's at Kirka-
bister; the ruins of St. Olla's and St.
Mary's still remain. The parish church,
an ancient structure, contains two marble
tablets to members of the Cameron Mouat
family : the church has been enlarged, and
in 1895-6 was repaired and restored, and
two stained windows inserted ; there are
sittings for 500 persons. Bressay is well
known for its bold and beautiful rock
scenery, the most striking feature being
the Isle of Noss, which lies due east of
Bressay and is separated from it by a
narrow and dangerous sound. The Noup
of Noss is nearly 600 feet in height, and
here innumerable birds of various kinds
may be seen during the summer months,
and grey eagles are occasionallv found.
The " Holm of Noss," a small table-land
lying on the south-west is detached from
the main island by a sheer gulf of 65 feet.
The island belongs to Miss A. Cameron
Mouat, of Gardie House. Part is rented
by the Marquess of Londonderry K.G.,
P.O. The area is 7,403 acres; rateable
value, £1,175; the population in 1801 was
802. and in 1901, 686.
Noss Island is included within thi.<
parish. The population in 1901 was 7.
Under the provisions of the " Local Govern-
ment (Scotland) Act, 1889 " (52 and 53 Vict,
c. 50, sections 44 to 50), boundary order
No. 94, East Burra, Hevera, Holm of Papal,
