1336 SELKIBK.
the beautiful mansion of the Duke ol Buc-
cleuch E.G., K.T., D.L. stands near the
junction of the Yarrow and Ettriek waters,
in a park about 1 mile long by half a mile
broad, and contains a small lake. Philip-
haugh, an ancient estate, an existing char-
ter of which dates from the time of Robert
the Bruce, was the scene of the disastrous
battle, 13 Sept. 1G45, when the royalist
forces under the Marquess of Montrose,
were defeated by David Leslie and the
Scottish Covenanters : it is now the resi-
dence of William Strang Steel esq. and
includes a castellated mansion, standing
in a park, on the north bank of the
Yarrow. The Haining, the seat of Pro-
fessor A. Seth Pringle-Pattison LL.D.,
has a park about 1 mile long by half a
mile broad, and contains a lake about a
quarter of a mile in length. Broad-
meadows, on the north bank of the Yarrow
water, in a small park, is the seat of
Robert James Lang esq. Sunderland
Hall, on the south bank of the Tweed, sur-
rounded by grounds, is the seat of Charles
Henry Scott-Plummer esq. D.L. , J. P.
Whitmuir Hall is another seat in the narish,
Newark Castle, standing near the Yarrow
water, but now in ruins, was built by
James II. and the royal arms, with the
unicorn, are engraved on a stone in the
western side. The office of keeper was
latterly held by the Douglas-Scofcfc family,
dukes of Buecleuch, and when the
forest of Ettriek was disparked, they ob-
tained a grant of the castle in perpetuity.
The area of the civil parish is 17,854 ;
burgh, 325 acres; gross rateable value of
the landward, £13,000; of the burgh,
£27,892; population 1891, 7,298, and in
1901, civil parish, 7,090; ecclesiastical
parish, 4,960; royal and parliamentary
burgh, 5,701; police burgh, 5,486.
Under the provisions of the " Local Gov-
ernment Act, 1889 " (52 and 53 Vict. c. 50,
sections 44 to 50), that part of Selkirk
parish formerly in Roxburghshire has been
added to this county
Heatherlie is a quoad sacra parish,
constituted in January, 1885, and comprises
about one-third of the area of the lower
part of the parish. The population in 1901
was 2,146.
The number of electors on the parlia-
mentary register in 1903 was 967.
