KILMALCOLM is a parish and village,
on the road from the Bridge of Weir to Port
Glasgow, in Greenock small debt court dis-
trict and Paisley poor combination, 10 miles
north-west from Paisley, 7 south-east from
Greenock and rather more than that dis-
tance in the same direction from Johnstone,
with a station on the (S-lasgow and South-
western railway. The district is intersected
by the Gryffe and Duchal streams. The
village is lighted with gas by a company.and
extends from the Clyde into the hilly coun-
try south of Port Glasgow, and takes its
name from the cell founded here by St.
Columba; in later times it was the bury-
ing place of the Earls of Glencairn. The
hills rise to a considerable height ; one
known as the Laird's Seat is 1,084 feet high,
and Hyndal Hill, 1,244 feet. The parish
church, built about 1826, is 9 plain edifice
of stone, with clock tower, and has sittings
for 500 persons : in the church is a memo-
rial to the Rev. Alexander Leek, a former
minister, and a brass inscribed to the Cun-
ninghames, Earls of Glencairn, a title which
became dormant on the death of John, 15th
earl, 24th September, 179G ; they were for
many generations owners of the lands of
Finlaystone in this parish, and this memo-
rial was erected in August, 1892, by their
descendant Robert Bontine Cunninghame-
Graham esq. D.L., J.P. of Gartmore.
There is a branch here of the Royal Bank
of Scotland Limited. The Kilmalcolm Hy-
dropathic Establishment and Sanitorium is
a fine building, standing 450 feet above
the sea level, and commands an extensive
view: from the tower, Ben Lomond, Ben
Ledi and the whole range of Cowal hills
from the Gareloch on the Clyde to Goat-
fell in Arran are visible : the grounds ex-
tend to upwards of 22 acres. Duchal
House, 2 miles south of the village, is the
seat of Sir Michael Robert Shaw-Stewart
bart. lord-lieutenant of Renfrewshire, and
near it are the ruins of Duchal Castle: in
the neighbourhood is Divots or the Devil's
Glen, containing some fine scenery and
noted as being the place across which Sir
William Wallace forced his horse to leap
when escaping from the English. Finlay-
stone House is the seat of George Jardine
Kidston esq. Sir Michael R. Shaw-Stewart
bart. of Ardgowan, George Jardine Kidston
esq. of Finlaystone, and Henry MacDowall
esq. of Garthland and Carruth, are the
principal landowners. The area comprises
19,459 acres; rateable value, £37,510; the
population of the civil parish in 1891 was
3,649, and in 1901, 4,869, viz.: 2,649 land-
ward and 2,220 town.
