KILBAECHAN is a parish, town and
burgh of barony, in the small debt court
district of Paisley, 1£ miles west from
Johnstone, and about 5 west from Paisley,
with a station at Milliken Park on the Glas-
gow and South Western railway. The manu-
facture of silk, cotton, shawls, robes &c.
is carried on here. The town is lighted
with gas by a company established in 1846.
The parish church, built in 1720, is a plain
edifice of stone, with a belfry tower at the
rorth-east angle, containing a clock; there
are sittings for 900 persons. There
public library containing several thousand
volumes, and a branch of the Clydesdale
Bank Limited. A horse fair is held an
nually on the first Tuesday in December
(old style). On the tower of the School-
house is a statue, executed by Archibald
Robertson, sculptor, of Greenock, of
Habbie Simpson, the well-known Scotch
piper, who was born in this parish. Ean-
furly Castle, now in ruins, is 1£ miles
west of Kilbarchan village. Milliken House
is the property and residence of Daniel
Mackenzie esq. Craigends, on the bank of
the river Gryfe, 3 miles north-west of
Johnstone, is the seat of John Charles
Cuninghame esq. D.L., J. P. and Merchiston
House, 1 mile north-west of Johnstone, is
the seat of A. W. Finlayson esq. John
C. Cuninghame esq. D.L., J.P. ; Robert
Thomas Napier Speir esq. D.L., J.P. of
Culdees, Muthell, and James Widdrington
Shand-Harvey esq. D.L., J.P. of Castle
Semple, are the principal landowners. The
area of the parish comprises 9,006 acres;
rateable value, £47,604; population in 1891
was 7,111, and in 1901, 7,226, including
2,886 in the town and 1,603 in the Bridge
of Weir. The population of the ecclesi-
astical parish in 1901 was 3,739.
Clippens is a village in Kilbarchan parish,
about 3 miles west from Paisley.
Balaclava is a small village in this parish.
