FOKFARSHIRE.
CARNOUSTIE is a thriving town on
the North Sea and a police burgh, two-third a
of which are within the parish of Barry and
the remainder, known as Newton and West-
haven portions, in the parish of Panbride ;
it is in the small debt court district of Ar-
broath, from which town it lies 6 miles
south, and is 10 east-by -north from Dundee
with a station on the joint line of the Cale-
donian and North British railways. The
Bay, to the north-west of which the town
stands, is large, but too open and shallow to
be useful as a harbour. Carnoustie is now
much resorted to as a watering-place and
has good bathing and accommodation for
visitors, besides go'.f clubs. The golf course
is of 18 holes ; there are also tennis courts
and bowling greens. The town is governed
by a provost, two bailies, and six coun-
cillors. â–  It is well drained and has water-
works connected with a large reservoir
at Crombie belonging to Dundee. The
large jute works of Messrs. James
Smieton and Sons employ about 400 hands,
and there are also vitriol works, a large
iron foundry, boot and shoe factories and
vegetable preserve works. There are
several first-class hotels. The Union Club
Limited, in Park avenue, and opened 2
Jan. 1899, was erected at a cost of about
£1,500, and has now (1903) about 250
members. The Bank of Scotland and the
North of Scotland Bank Limited have
branches here, and there is also a Savings
Bank. The Municipal offices in the Hligh st.
were erected in 1897-8, at a cost, including
furnishing, of £3,000, from designs by Mr.
James P. Bruce, architect, Dundee and
Carnoustie. There are twn Established
churches, three United Free churches, Epis-
copal, and Original Secession Churches.
The area of the burgh is 550 acres: rate-
able value, £6,858 ; the population in
1891 was 4,134, and in 1901, 5,204 burgh,
and 3.243 ecclesiastical.
