WEMYSS,
WITH THE VILLAGES OF EAST AND WEST WEMYSS.
WEMYSS is a parish which comprises the
villages of East and West Wemyss, the
Coaltown of Wemyss, Kirkland and Methil-
hill and the Police Burgh of Buckhill,
Methil and Innerleven, in the Kirkcaldy
district: it derives its name from the
Celtic word " uamh," signifying a cave.
The parish is bounded on the north by
Kennoway and Markinch, on the south by
the Firth of Forth, on the east by Scoonie,
and on the west by Dysart; its" length is
6 miles east to west, and a mile and a half
in breadth. There are four stations in this
parish on the branch of the North British
railway, which runs from Thornton Junc-
tion to Methil, and the Anstruther and St.
Andrews line skirts the northern border
of the parish. The mineral is coal, being
very considerable and extensively wrought.
A large portion of the Wemyss estate con-
sists of coal seams of various depths : which
have been increasingly wrought of late
years, and a very large quantitv of coal
is yet unexcavated. In West Wemyss the
coal trade has considerably increased, and
several pits have been opened at Muiredge,
besides a new pit sunk between the Castle
and East Wemyss. Within the parish is
the ancient castle of Macduff, now a ruin.
This massive structure crowns a height
above the shore, to the east of East
Wemyss, commanding a most extensive
view seaward. Near Macduff's Castle are
several extensive excavations at the base
of the bank, which have evidently been
formed by the action of the sea at a very
remote period; one of these caves is
•called the " King's Cave," from the tradi-
tion that James V. in one of his frolics,
joined an encampment of gipsies here. The
iormation of the caves themselves is a
rresult of the extraordinary force of the
sea rolling in upon the new red sandstone
wocks forming this part of the Fife coast
from the German Ocean. One of them,
immediately under Macduff's Castle, is so
narrow at the mouth that it is d fficult to
â– enter, but it expands so as easily to con-
tain 100 persons. Another near is about
fifty feet in height, and formed like a fine
cupola. A third, still larger, between East
and West Wemyss, and termed the " Glass
Cave," but now ruinous, owing to the coal
workings, was used at the end of the 18th
century for the manufacture of glass from
kelp formed from the seaweed. The land
generally is in an excellent state of cul-
tivation. A fair is held at Wemyss on the
-second Wednesday in September. This
place gives the title of Earl to the Wemyss-
'Chirteris-Douglas family, also Earls" of
March (1697), Barons E'lcho, and Wemyss,
•of Elchn, 1628, in the peerage of Scotland,
â–  and Baron Wemyss, of the United King-
dom, 1821. There are United. Free and
^Established churches in the village. Ran-
dolph Gordon Erskine-Wemyss esq. D.L.,
-J.P. of Wemyss Castle, is the principal
landowner. The area of the parish com-
prises 4,732 acres; rateable value, land-
ward, £CG.1G7; burghal (Buckhaven and
Methil). £24,015. The population in 1891
was 9,955. and in 1901 was : Buckhaven,
Methil and Innerleven police burgh. 8,210;
beyond polfce burgh, 618; East Wemvss
town. 2,528 and landward, 3,675 ; total,
15,031.
En>-t-, Wpmyss is a villasre in the pnri=h
of Wemyss, one mile north-onst from West
Wemys.-, 5 north-east from Kirkcaldy, and
3 north-east from Dysart, situated on the
Firth of Forth. In this village the manu-
facture of linen fabrics is carried on ex-
tensively, the factory of Messrs. G. <fc J.
Johnston oontaininc between two and three
hundred power looms; theift is also a
brewery and malting house. Population in
1901, 2,532.
West Wpniyss is a villaee, a mile wp?t
from East Wemyss, 4 north-east from Kirk-
caldy, 5 south-west from Leven, and 2
north-past from Dysart; it is in the parish
of Wemyss, and is a burgh of baron v, go-
verned by two bailies, twelve councillors
and a treasurer. The harbour is situated
at its western extremity, and has several
vessels belonging to it employed in the ex-
portation of coal, which is wrought close
to the harbour. A short distance east of
the village, on the brink or face of an emi-
nence, and surrounded on the land side by
beautiful plantations and pleasure grounds,
is Wemyss Castle, the seat of Randolph
Gordon Erskine-Wemyss esq. D.L., J.P.
who is the sole proprietor of the parish,
and the representative of the oldest family
in the county. The Established church is
the only place of worship. There is also
a school here. Population in 1901, 1,253.
Kirkland is a village in the parish; popu-
lation in 1901, 361.
