Madras College is on the south side of
South street, immediately behind and
comprehending within it part of the
ruins of the Black Friars monastery.
The College was endowed by the late Dr.
Bell, the distinguished founder of several
similar establishments, both in this and
in other towns in Scotland. The founda-
tion stone was laid on the 9th April,
1832. Under the plan formulated by the
Endowed Schools Commissioners for Scot-
land, this institution is now converted
into a Bchool for secondary education

for senior and junior pupils respectively.

St. Leonard's School is Intended to pro-
vide for girls an education equal to that
given to boys at the great public schools,
and haB seven houses for boarders, each
holding from 26 to 28 girlB, and an
auxiliary house for 12 girls, and there are
also some 20 day scholars. Attached are
grounds of 16 acres, including a cricket
field, golf course, and tennis, hockey, and
fives courts ; instruction is also given, by
arrangement, in riding and driving. There
is a hospice for non-infectious, and a
sanatorium for infectious illnesses. The
council give seven scholarships, each of
the value of £25 per annum, to girls who
have obtained one of the higher certificates
of the Oxford and Cambridge Board, and
have been not less than two years in the
school, and these are tenable as long as
the holders remain at the school.
Annually, in October, trie Council give a
scholarship of £35 a year, tenable for three
years at any college selected by the scholar.
Triennially, in October, Miss Dove's Classi-
cal Scholarship of £20 a year, with £15
added by the council, and tenable for three
years at Girton College, Cambridge, is
awarded.

St. Katharine School is a preparatory
school for St. Leonards, and is intended
for girls under 14 years of age. The build-
ings are situated between North street and
the Scores, and include a large workshop,
used by all the children, in which car-
pentry, book-binding and basket-making
are taught. Attached are a playground and
a garden, together about two acres. Head
