CR A IL. is a seaboard parish, occupying the
extreme north-easterly shore of the Firth of
Forth, the Fife Ness promontory marking
the mouth of the !Firth; the seaport of
same name as the parish lies a few miles
south-west of the Ness, is a royal and parlia-
mentary burgh; it was known formerly as
Cathair-uille or Carr-uille, and has a sta-
tion on the Thornton, Anstruther and St.An-
drews section of the North British railway.
The parish, which is in the small debt court
district of Anst»ther, extends 3 miles along
the shore of the Firth of Forth, and its
breadth of 2 miles lies along the North sea,
besides which a part almost as large lies in-
land north of Kilrenny and Carnbee parishes,
and on the north-west and north the bound-
aries are the parishes of Denino, St. Leo-
nard and Kingsbarns. The burgh, which
consists of two main streets, one containing
some massive old houses,, is mentioned by
old historians as a town of considerable note
so early as the middle of the 9th century. Its
importance in latter days has, however,
greatly declined, notwithstanding it pos-
sesses great capabilities as a port, and with
the exception of crab fishing, for which it is
famous, ib enjoys but very little trade. This
in some measure may be ascribed to the
inconvenience of its harbour, for it is other-
wise eligibly situated. Its principal exports
consist of grain and potatoes; the imports
are chiefly coal. Crail was erected into a
royal burgh by David I. and confirmed by
Robert Bruce, and it is governed by a pro-
vost, two bailies, and six councillors. In
conjunction with St. Andrews, Cupar Fife,
[slater's
the Anstruther 3, Kilrenny, and Pitten-
weem, it forms the St. Andrews parlia-
mentary district, constituted under the
" Reform Act of 1832," and returning one
member. It is now a place of summer
resort, and has two golfing courses and
public bowling greens, and there is also
a public library of 2,000 volumes. A little
to the east of the harbour are the frag-
ments of a castle, or palace, once the
residence of David I., the remains of which
consist chiefly of a wall, now partly en-
closed in a garden. The parish church
was anciently a collegiate church, and
here John Knox preached. The celebrated
James Sharp, Archbishop of St. Andrews,
1G61-79, was minister of the church for
12 years, and his handwriting is still to be
seen in the session records. Wormiston
House is the seat of the Earl of Lindsay
J.P. The Earl of Lindsay, Col. Sir ffolliott
Williams Erskine bart. of Cambo, Charle-
ton, J. B. Monypenny esq. of Pitmilly,
Philip G. Anstruther esq. John Duncan
esq. of Kirkmay, Mrs. Mary J. A. Horsley,
Rev. Henry A. G. Sheppard M.A. of Red-
nock House, Stirling, and Lieut.-Col.
George Hannay, of Kingsmuir, are the
principal landowners. The area comprises
6,348 acres; rateable value £14,593; the
population in 1891 was 1,704 and in 1901,
1,605, of which the burgh contained 1,077.
The number of electors on the parlia-
mentary register in 1903 was 211.
