AUCHTERMUCHTY,
WITH THE VILLAGE OF DUiNSHALT.
AUCHTERMUCHTY is a parish and a royal
T burgh, the latter, 19 miles west-south-west
from St. Andrews, 14 south-south-east from
Perth, 5 south from Newburgh, 17 north
from Kirkcaldy and 28 nearly due north
from Edinburgh. A station on the Maw-
carse and Ladybank section of the North
British railway is adjacent to the town.
The land in the vicinity of the town is re-
â– markably rich and fertile, and the climate
is considered very salubrious ; the parish
is bounded north by Perthshire, west by
Strathmiglo. south by Falkland and east by
â– Collessie; the town is situated on the road
from Kinross to Cupar Fife, 9 miles from
the latter town. It is irregularly built;
many of the houses are thatched and low,,
•but the greater portion are of a superior
appearance. A stream of water called
"Lover's Pool" runs through the town,
dividing it into two nearly equal parts; it
was constituted a royal burgh by James
IV. which charter was confirmed by James
VI. and it still enjoys all the privileges
arising therefrom, and is governed by a
provost, two bailies, nine councillors, a
treasurer and town clerk, and has a
sheriff's small debt court, which is held
quarterly. A considerable trade is carried
on here in manufacturing linen. Malting
and distilling are likewise engaged in,
and the making of scales, beams and
weighing machines has been established
here for upwards of two centuries. There
are branches of the Bank of Scotland
and Union Bank of Scotland Limited,
and a Savings Bank. The Victoria Hall,
erected in 1865, is a fine building. The
parish church, near the centre of the town,
is an ancient structure, and has been
enlarged. The People's Institute comprises
reading, recreation and temperance re-
freshment rooms ; it also contains some
bedrooms and a hall for meetings. There
is also another reading room in the town,
and a well-stocked library. Fairs are held
on the last Monday in April and the Thurs-
day after the second Monday in July.
Lord Edw. Ninian Crichton-Stuart of
Falkland and W. B. 'Skene esq. of Pillour
house, Strathmiglo, are the principal
landowners. The area comprises 3,531
acres; rateable value of parish, landward
£7,310 with railway, of burgh £2,678;
the population of the parish in 1891,
2,002, and in 1901 was 1,884, of whom 637
were in the burgh.
Dunshalt is a small village situated about
I mile south from and in the parish of
Auchtermuchty, where there is a linen fac-
tory and a board school. Auchtermuchty
