ABERDOUR.
ABERDOUR is a parish and a village sea-
port and burgh of barony, on the north
shore of the Firth of Forth, extending 3£
miles from north to south by the same in
breadth, 12 miles north-west from Edin-
burgh (across the Firth of Forth), 9 south-
west from Kirkcaldy, 8 south-east from
Dunfermline and 3 west from Burntisland,
and within the Parliamentary division of
West Fife. There is a station here on the
North British railway, opened in 1890, and
connecting Inverkeithing and Burntisland.
Burntisland parish bounds it on the east,
Auchentool and Eeath on the north and
Dalgetty on the west. The small island of
Inch-Colm belongs to the parish. A small
ridge of hills runs from east to west. Aber-
dour is a place of considerable antiquity,
and belonged in the 12th century to the
family of Dupont, from whom it passed to
the Mortimers by marriage, afterwards to
the Douglasses, one of whom, in 1457, was
created Lord Aberdour and Earl of Morton
and whose castle, which stood close to the
village, was burnt down by accident in
1745, while occupied by a detachment of
troops. The Mortimers appear to have
bestowed Wester Aberdour upon the
Abbey of Inch-Colm, and it was made a
burgh of barony under the abbot in 1500;
Easter Aberdour, which was retained by
the family, being made a burgh of barony
in 1643. Aberdour is a favourite place of
resort during the summer season, there
being good bathing and the village having
a warm aspect Ready access is obtained
by steam vessels and other means of con-
veyance from the opposite shore. The
ruins of the church, dating from before
1178, lie to the south-east of the castle.
In the village are Established, United Free
and Episcopal churches ; there ore also two
board schools in the parish. The island of
Inch-Colm lies in the mid-channel of the
Firth of Forth, about 2 miles Bouth of Aber-
dour, and contains the extensive remains of
an Augustinian Abbey, founded about 1123,
by Alexander I. ; the buildings, of grey
stone, consist of the ruins of the octagonal
Chapter House, with groined roof and a
muniment room above it, half of the
Lady Chapel, a Bhort massive square tower,
and some remains of domestic buildings and
of u small square chapel supposed to be the
original cell first founded in the island. The
hamlet of Donibristle Colliery is three
miles north from the village, and the fine
policies of Donibristle Park, a seat of
the Earl of Moray, lies to the west (the
house being in the adjoining parish of
Dalgetty) ; part of Fordel village is also in
this parish. The Earl of Moray, the Earl
of Morton, Charles Grey Wotherspoon esq.
J.P. and Patrick HiHl Normand esq. J.P.
are the principal landowners. The area
comprises 5,805 acres ; rateable value in
1903, £21,200 ; the population in 1891
was 1,977, and 1901, 1,997; these figures
included 805 persons in the village of
Aberdour in 1901, and 487 persons in the
hamlet of Donibristle in 1901.
