the north-eastern branch after leaving Afloa passing through Kin-
ross-shire and Auchtermuchty, and.crosslng the Newburgh branch
at Ladybank, continues through Cupar to Leuchars Junction,
where it. joins the Tay Bridge line.
Divisions, Representations &c. — This county forms a sheriffdom,
under one sheriff depute; bat being divided" into an eastern and
a western district, each is placed under the jurisdiction of a sheriff
substitute; in these two districts, are comprehended the four
sub-divisions of St. Andrews, Cupar, Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy.
It has politically and ecclesiastically attached to it the islands of
Inchcolm, Inchkeith and May, in the Firth of Forth. Fifeshire
comprises sixty-two parishes ; it contains seventeen Royal burghs
(out of the 70 contained in all Scotland), and of these thirteen
are burghs with parliamentary representation; these, conjointly
with Queensferry in Linlithgowshire and Stirling in Stirling-
shire, return three members. The shire formerly returned but;
one representative, but is now separated into the Eastern and
Western divisions, each of which sends a member. The parlia-
mentary constituency for 1903 was: Eastern Division, U.700;
Western Division, 13,261. The population of the entire shire in
1891 was 187,320, and in 1001 218,391.
