GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY is a burgh and
modern village in the civil parish of Crom-
dale, on the north bank of the Spey, with
a station on the Highland railway, and
another, 1£ miles distant, on the" Great
North of Scotland railway, rather more
than a mile south of Castle Grant, 35
miles south-east from Inverness, 22 south
from Forres, 8 north-east from Duthil and
6 north from Abernethy : it is the head
of a small debt court district, and was
made a police burgh in 1898, and is situ-
ated in the ecclesiastical parish called
" Inverallan." Grantown was begun about
the year 1774, under the patronage of the
Grant family, who have been its con-
tinued benefactors ; and a large number
of the inhabitants retain the name of Grant
to the present day. Large numbers ot
visitors from Edinburgh, Glasgow and
London come here during the summer
months. Branches of the National Bank
of Scotland Limited, the Royal Bank of
Scotland and the Caledonian Banking Co.
Limited are established in the town, and
there is also a branch of the National Se-
curity Savings Bank. There are also three
excellent and commodious hotels — the
Grant Arms, Palace and Strathspey. The
Established church for the quoad sacra
parish of Inverallan is an edifice of stone,
built in 1884 by Caroline Stuart, Dowager
Countess of Seafield; there is also a United
Free church, an Episcopalian church and
a Baptist chapel. Free church services are
held in the Institute buildings. A sheriff
small debt circuit court is held on the
third Monday in January, the second Mon-
day in May and the first Monday in Sep-
tember. The Cottage Hospital was built in
1884 by the Dowager Countess of Seafield,
in memorv of Ian Charles, 8th Earl of
Seafield (d. 18 Feb. 1881). The Young
Men's and Women's Christian Association
Hall, erected in 1897, is a building of
stone, containing lecture and concert room,
tea rooms and reading room ; there is also
an Orphan Institution. Castle Grant, a mo-
dern mansion, with which is Incorporated
an ancient structure called " Comyns
Tower," is a seat of Caroline, Countess
Dowager of Seafield.
Fairs are held on the Tuesday after the
