morn, also several stone quarries. Alexander II., in 1224, granted
co the burgesses of Elgin a guild of merchants, "which still
continues though the funds of the corporation were, for a con-
siderable period, merged in the common good; connected with
the guildry there is a flourishing charity fund from which de-
cayed members and their families derive substantial pensions.
There are several mineral springs in the vicinity of Elgin. The
weekly corn markets are held on Friday; cattle auctions are
also held every Friday. The feeing markets are 26th May, if
Friday, if not, Friday before, the first Friday in July (harvest)
and the Friday before the 28th November. The area of the
parish comprises 19,166 acres; population in 1891, 9,285, and in
1901 was: parliamentary and royal burgh, 6,977; beyond par-
liamentary and royal burgh, 147; landward, 3,153; total, 10,277,
including 22 officials and 188 inmates in the District Asylum.
The total population of the police burgh drawn from three
parishes (Elgin, St. Andrew's, Lhanbryde and New Spynie)
was 8,407, and of the royal burgh, 8,260, and the number of
inhabited houses, 1,698 in the former and 1,670 in the latter.
The rateable value of the borough is £40,650. The number of
electors on tile parliamentary register in 1903, 1.112. The land
in the city is chiefly freehold. In the parish and about 6 miles
pouth-west of the town, on the left bank of the Lochty or
Black Burn, are the ruins of Pluscarden Priory, partially
restored in 1899 by the late Marquis of Bute K.T.
New Elgin is a village in Elgin civil parish : the population
in 1901 was 874.
