NEWBATTLE is a parish and small vil-
lage jn Dalkeith poor combination and smal 1
debt court district; the village is situated
EDINBURGHSHIRE.
about a mile to the south of Dalkeith, where
there i& a station on the North Brlt.sh rail-
way, and Is watered by the South Esk
Newton Grange is s village in this parish.
The parish church is a plain building, but
several of the windows are stained. In
1895 it was enlarged and restored, when an
ancient aisle, for many years walled up, was
re-opened, and named " Lord Ancram's
aisle," as a memorial to Walter William
Schomberg (Kerr), Earl of Ancram, who
died in June, 1892. Hobert Leigh ton, after-
wards Bishop of Dunblane and Archbishop
of Glasgow, was minister of Newbattle from
1641 to 1G52, and the pu'.p.t in which he
preached is still in use. In the church is a
mural tablet, erected in memory of the
archbishop, who died 1 Feb. 1684. The
parish abounds in- valuable coal mines,
worked by the Lothian Coal €o. Limited.
Newbattle Abhey. the seat of the Marquess
of Lothian D.L. who is also Baron Ker of
Newbattle, occupies part of the site of the
ancient Cistercian abbey, and it is sur-
rounded by grounds containing some of
the oldest and largest trees in the king'
dom, including a beech of extraordinary
dimensions. The mansion has a collection
of valuable painting's, both ancient and
modem. The abbey of Newbattle, or New>
bo tie, was founded In 1140 by David I. for
the monks of the Cistercian order. The
buildings were burnt by Bichard II. of
England in 1.185. and again by the Earl of
Hertford in 1544. The architecture is chiefly
Early English, and has been assigned to the
middle of the 13th century. The founda-
tions of the Abbey Church, accidently dis-
covered, have now been disclosed through-
out, and show that it consisted of a. long
nave with aisles, choir and a central tower.
In 1802 some workmen in digging, came
upon the foundations of the north transept
and side chapels.; the excavations were con-
tinued in 1893 and 1894. and revealed the
bases of piers, in line with those now re-
maining in the crypt, and connecting them
with the south transept. An immense open
chimney (12 ft. 6 in. by 6 ft.) was also dis-
covered. The piers of the crypt are octa-
gonal, the plain shafts measuring 3 ft. 6 in.
in height, and carrying circular arches ;
some finely carved bosses were also found,
one of which is placed in the crypt, which,
so far as at present opened, is 100 feet long
by 27 ft. 7 in. wide. The Great Hall and
the Chapter house have also been examined,
and from the east end of the church towards
the south, the foundations of other build-
ings were met with, including a portion of
the stair from the dorter (dormitory), and
an entrance to the cloisters; the walls are
of ashlar, and on the south of this en-
trance was a groined chamber with the bases
of four columns, and. extending east and
west, a stone built arched culvert of ashlar
work; the line of the walls and position of
the piers of the church have been carefully
marked with brown glazed fire-clay edging,
specially made. In course of the work a
number of stone coffins were found, princi-
pally outside the choir and north transept,
and one of polished stone near the entrance
to the church from the cloisters. The area
of the parish comprises 5,186 acres; rate-
able value, £11,186; the population in 1891
was 3,560. and in 1901, 4,557, viz. : land-
ward, 2,151 and Newton Grange Town,
2,406. Population of the ecclesiastical
parish in 1901, 3,836.
Easthouses is a village in the parish;
the population in 1901 was 327.
A portion of thlis parish, with an estimated
population of 80, was transferred to Bortb-
wick bv an Order of the Secretary for
Scotland, dated Sept. 18, 1895.
