INVERESK is a parish and village and
the head of a poor combination, in the small
debt court district of Edinburgh, and has a
junction station on the North, British rail-
way. There Is also a station at New Hailes
in this parish. The parish includes the
town of Musselburgh and the villages of
Inveresk, Cowpits, Deantown, Wailyford,
Monktonhall and Old and New Craighall.
The pleasant village of Inveresk consists
chiefly of mansions and villas, surrounded
by attractive grounds. The parish church,
which occupies the summit of the hill of
Inveresk, is a large square edifice in a
plain style, and has a tower with a lofty
and elegant spire. Several of the windows
are stained : the oak pulpit is a copy of
one at Santa Croce, Florence. There is a
communion table of carved oak, a brass
lectern, and some monuments. In the
churchyard is the grave of David Macbeth
Moir, surgeon, poet and litterateur, born
at Musselburgh 5 Jan. 1798, died 6 July,
1851. Pinkie House, long the country resi-
dence of the Abbots of Dunfermline, and
the residence of Sir Alexander Hope bart.
J.P. is delightfully situated in extensive
policies, with fine old trees. Its turreted
tower and much admired Gothic fountain
are, perhaps, the portions of greatest
antiquity and interest. The site of the
battle of Pinkie, 10 Sept. 1547, is about a
mile south of Pinkie House, and overlook-
ing it, a mile and a half further off, is
Carberry hill, celebrated for the surrender
of Queen Mary to the confederated nobility
15 June, 1567, and her final parting with
Bothwell. Near is the fine mansion of
Carberry Tower, the s-eat of Lor dElphin stone.
New Hailes, a fine mansion half a mile
Bouth-west from Fisherrow, now the property
and residence of Sir Charles Dalrvmple bart.
M.P., J.P. was the seat of Sir David Dal-
rymple bart. who was in 1766 appointed a
lord of session, as Lord Hailes ; he was dis-
tinguished as the great restorer of Scottish
history and antiquities, and died in this
mansion 29 Not. 1792, where his valuable
library is carefully preserved. Near the
house is a monument to John, 2nd Earl of
Stair, K.T. Field Marshal, and ambas-
sador to France, d. 1747. In this par-
ish are found limestone, freestone, and
coal, the latter particularly in abundance.
From the higher grounds to the south very
extensive views are to be obtained, reaching
from Ben Lomond, Ben Ledi and Ben Voir-
lich on the west to the German Ocean, and
from the Grampians, Ochils, and Lomonds
to the Pentlands 1 , Moorfoots, the Lammer-
muirs, the Firth of Forth, and Fife coast,
