DUDDINGSTON is a parish, in Inver-
esk poor combination and the small debt
court district of Edinburgh and containing
a portion of the burgh of Edinburgh, and
is bounded by the parish of Canongate, a
part of the metropolis on the west, South
Leith on the north, the sea and part of
Inveresk on the east, and Liberton on
the south ; Duddingston and Craigmillar
station on the Edinburgh Suburban and
Southside line of the North British rail-
way, is near the southern border of the
parish. Superiority of the barony of Dod-
inestoun, with the church, was granted
to Kelso Abbey, founded by David I. in
1128, and remained in the possession of
the abbey till the Reformation, when the
barony came into the possession of tha
Thompson family, the last of whom was
made a baronet by Charles I. in 1Q3G.
The barony of Duddingston became, in 1674,
the property of the notorious John (Mait-
land), Duke of Lauderdale, from whom it
passed with his step-daughter, Elizabeth
(Tollemache), to her husband Archibald, 1st
Duke of Argyll. In 1745 it was sold by his
successor to James, 8th Earl of Abercorn.
whose present representative, the Duke of
Abercorn K.G. still holds a large portion
of it. Easter and Wester Duddingston are
both villages in this parish. Wester Dud-
dingston is charmingly situated near the
base of Arthur's Seat, and at the east end
of Duddingston Loch and round Arthur's
Seat is a noble thoroughfare, known as the
Queen's Drive. The church, which stands
on a small eminence rising from the verge
of the water, is an edifice of Norman origin,
built in the first part of the 12th century,
but has been modernised externally. Dud-
dingston House is the residence of General
H. A. Coekburn. Duddingston Loch, a
beautiful sheet of water, is about a third of
a mile in length, and not more than half a
mile from the southern outskirts of Edin-
burgh. There is an excellent road between
Duddingston and Portobello. The Duke of
Abercorn K.G., P.O. is lord of the manor
and principal landowner. The area com-
prises 1,571 acres; the population in 1891
was 9,643, and in 1901, 11,203, including
622 in Edinburgh and 9,180 in Portobello;
population of the ecclesiastical parish in
1901, 4,328. Wester Duddingston is a vil-
lage in the parish; the population in 1901
was 403.
