"WEST CALDER is a parish and village,
in Edinburgh small debts court district,
and the parish being about 10 miles
length and 5£ in breadth; the village is
about 5 miles south-south-west from Mid-
Calder, 16£ south-west from Edinburgh and
31 east from Glasgow, and has a station
close by on the Edinburgh and Glasgow
section of the Caledonian railway. The dis-
trict generally is highly cultivated. The
Paraffin Oil Works, established in this
parish in 18G6 by Mr. James Young, the
patentee, who purchased several large pro-
perties here, containing some beds of rich
bituminous shale, have created a new vil-
lage, called Addiewell. In the immediate
vicinage, at a place called Castle Craig, are
the traces of a Boman encampment. A
newspaper called the " Midlothian Adver-
tiser and West Lothian and Lanarkshire
News " is published every Saturday. The
Bight Hon. Aretas Akers-Douglas P.C.,
M.P. of Craigs, Dumfries, Thomas Barr, of
Harburn, Mrs. Mary Walker, of Limefield,
and Young's Paraffin Oil Co. are the prin-
cipal landowners. The area comprises
21,981 acre3; rateable value, £35,748; the
population in 181*1 was 8,456, and in
1901, 8,092, including 2,652 in the town
and 1,591 in Addiewell. The population of
West Calder ecclesiastical parish in 1901
was 5,038.
Addiewell is a manufacturing village and
ecclesiastical parish, about 1J miles south-
west from West Calder village, and sprang
up in 1866 in connection with the paraffin
oil works, established here by Mr. James
Young. The population of the ecclesiastical
parish in 1901 was 3,054.
Cobbinshaw is a village ; the population
in 1901 was 348. Gavieside is also a vil-
lage ; the population in 1901 was 411.
Mossend is a village ; the population in
1901 was 657.

CARRINGTON is a small parish anr3

pleasantly seated on elevated land, 9$j
miles south-east from Edinburgh, and 3^
from Gorebridge (the nearest) station on'
the North British railway. Though nofr
unfavourable to the growth of corn, the
soil is more particularly adapted to that
of potatoes and green crops ; coal is abun&i-
ant, and there are also indications of iron-
stone. Kirkhill, in this parfeh, is the resi-
dence of Col. Robert Dundas D.L., J.P:

hill, is the principal landowner. The area)
