WIGTOWNSHIRE
KIRKMAIDEN, DRUMORE, STONEYKIRK,
AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
rpHE parish of Kirkmaiden occupies nearly the whole of the
-*- western limb or peninsula of Wigtownshire, projecting into the
mouth of the Solway Frith, and tapering to a poiut that inclines
ti> the east. This parish, which comprehends the most southerly
disLrict of Scotland, is about 10 miles in length and from 2 to 4^ in
breadth ; it slill has a wild appearance, hut produces good crops of
corn and potatoes, and feeds numbers of black cattle. The coast is
generally bold, and indented by caves scooped out by the endless
operations of the sea, and particularly by its furious lashings
against the opposing barrier in stormy weather ; on both sides of
the peninsula, however, there are Beveral good auchoring grounds.
AtPorlnissock is a harbour, constructed at the expense of the late
Andrew M'Douall, Esq., then proprietor, who exerted himself to
improve this locality. There is also a tolerable harbour at Drum ore ;
here the coast-guard havo a station, under the coin maud of a lieu-
tenant of the royal navy. Oyster fishings are now carried on at
Drum ore in great activity by the local boats, under the surveillance
of the crown lessees, and the value of the produce annually raised
from these fishings averages about twenty thous imls pounds. The
church, a plain edilice, is situate near the centre of the parish, not
far from Druuiore bay, b' miles from the Mull of Galloway, 35 from j
Wigtown, 36 from Newlou-Stewart, 20 from Stranraer, and lb' from'

Portpatrick. On the estate of James M'Douall, Esq., of Logan, is a
fish pond well worthy the inspection of visitors ; it is hewn out of
the solid rock, and has communication with the sea by means of an
ingenuously contrived iron grating; some of the fish in this artifi-
cial reservoir have been rendered so tamo that they will feed from
the hand. The parish of Kirkmaiden, which embraces 13,780 acres,
in 18S1 contained a population of 2,446.
The parish -of Stoneykirk (more properly Steven's Kirk), lies in
the western peninsula of the county, to the north of Kirkmaiden,
(i miles from Stranraer and about the same distance from Portpat-
rick. On the east and south-east, is the hay of Luce. The parish,
which extends about 7 miles in length by from 3 to 5 in breadth,
comprehends the three old parishes of Stoneykirk, Clackshant and
Toskerton. The surface is generally hilly, moorish, and of a pastoral
character; the low grounds arc arable, and in somo places planted.
On the estate of Mrs. Matilda Maitland, in this district, is an artifi-
cial mound, supposed to be of Roman origin, and used as a beacon
in the time of war; there is likewise another of a similar kind
on the estate of the late Sir John M'Taggart, of Ardwell House.
The parish of Stoneykirk contains 19,480 acres : population in 18S1,
2,766.
