GLENLUCE and new luce.
GLENLUCE is a village in the parish of Old Luce. 19 miles e. by n.
from Portpatrick, 18 w. from Wigtown, 16 s.w. from Newton Stew-
art, and 10 e. by s. from Stranraer ; situated on the banks of the river
Luce, and on the public road, at the head of Luce bay, which here forms
a tolerably good harbour for small vessels. The country around is inter-
esting and picturesque, and abounds with game of almost every kind.
The church is a neat edifice, remarkable only for its simplicity ; there is
also a Free church, and one for United Presbyterians, and Board schools.
About a mile to the north of the church, further up the vale (from which
the village takes its name}, are the ruins of luce Abbey, founded by
Rolland, Lord of Galloway, in 1190. When in its perfect state it must
have been an extensive building. The vast mass of prostrate fragments
at present cover about an acre and a half of ground, notwithstanding
the quantities that have been carried away. The only part now re-
maining entire is a small apartment on the enst side of the square,
within which latter stood the cloisters ; in the middle of this apartment
stands a pillar, about fourteen feet high, from which eight arches spring.
Tradition reports Michael Scott, of cabalistic memory, to have been at
one time abbot of this establishment, and adds that his magical library
still exists under a particular part of the ruins; to ascertain which a
person excavated part of the ground and found many curiosities, to-
gether with several skeletons in an upright position ; the explorer,
however, having been seized with insanity, further search was interrupted
and the superstitions of the people prevented the others from pursuing
the investigation. The Portpatrick and Wigtownshire joint" line runs
through the town. The principal hotel is the King's Arms. There is a
monthly fair or market held here (for cattle) from the first Friday in the
month of April to the first Friday in December. Acreage of the parish,
31,596. Population in 1881, 2,447 ; of the village, 901-
The village of New Luce is five miles north from Glenluce, situated
on the Luce, where the Cross water falls into that river. This district,
which, until the year 1646 formed part of the parish of Old Luce, extends
about ten miles in length by from five to sis in breadth. It consists of
high and low ground ; of the former, the greater proportion is covered by
rocks or heath ; the arable land, which is not of great extent, lies princi-
pally on the banks of the rivers. The parish church, a plain building,
and a Free church are the places of worship ; there is also a Board
school. This is a station on the Girvan and Portpatriok Junction RaU-
way. New Luce parish, which embraces 28,877 acres, in 1881 contained
a population of 706.
