GARLIESTON and SORBIE.
GARLIESTON is a sea-port village in the parish of Sorbie, finely
situated at the head of Garlieaton bay (a small haven on the
west side of VV igtown bay). From the pier-head the Ross light bears
s.e. by E. For distance— See Sorbie. The place is built in the form
of a semicircle, facing the sea, with a safe and commodious harbour
capable of receiving a large number of vessels ; the ti'ie at the
spring flow rises eighteen feet. Regular steam communication is
maintained between this port and Liverpool once a fortnight, and
there are traders occasionally. The Broughtou and Poutenburn
streams, which here flow into the bay, are crossed by several |
bridges. Galloway House, a line mansion, the seat of the Earl of
Galloway, erected in 1740, is adjacent on the south, aud at present
occupied by Henry T. Broadhurst, Esq;, on short lease; it is sur-
rounded by beautiful plantations, and the grounds about it. for
several miles, are extremely picturesque, and the prospects on every
side delightful. Garlieston is a station on the Port Patrick aud
Wigtownshire Joint Railway. Population in 1881, 699.
Sorbie (or i Sorby) is a parish and village— the latter 39 miles e.
from Portpatrick, 90 s.e. from Stranraer, 13 s. from Newton-Stewart,
and 6 s. from Wigtown; situated in a fine part of the county, and
surrounded by land in a high state of cultivation. The parish is of
an irregular figure, extending along the shore about twelve miles,
and varying in breadth from two to six miles inland. The chief
bays in the parish are Garlieston and Rigg, with the ports of Allaue
Whaple, and Innerwell ; these bays and ports are very convenient
for shipping, and well adapted for the prosecutiouof the fisheries.
The headlands are Cruggleton and Eagerness ; upon thuse are the
remains of two strong castles, one of which, Cruggleton Castle,
gives the name to the promontory. It i? believed to li'ivc been
built by the Danes and Norwegians in 1098, and shortly afterwards
fell into the possession of the Kerlies, or M'Kerlies, who retained
possession until the Reformation. Previously they owned Carolton,
now Carletou Castle, near Girvan, which the Cathcarts obtained in
1324. Cruggleton Castle is celebrated for one of the successful ex-
ploits of Sir William Wallace, the great Scottish patriot. It was
taken by treachery, and Sir William retook it for his friend William
Kerlie, who was thereby restored to his patrimonial castle and ter-
ritory. This "is fully mentioned in Patersou's "" Wallace and
Times." Eagerness was also built by the Danes, but no particular
account has been handed down. About a mile to the east of the
kirk are the gradually mouldering outlines of Sorbie tower, formerly
belonging to the Hannay family. The Port Patrick and Wigtown-
shire Joint Railway runs close by the village. A new church was
opened in 1877. It is a fine Gothic structure, crm-iform in shape,
with tower and spire rising to a height of over 60 feet, and was
erected at a cost of about £2,500. It is situate at Millisle, about one
mile from Garlieston, and two from Sorbie. Sorbie belonged to a
family called Sorby, now changed to Sorbie. The Hannays did not
get it until a much later period. Sorbie parish, which embraces an
area of 9,611 acres, in 1881 contaiued a population of 1,696.
