ASSYNT,
WITH THE PARISHES AND VILLAGES OF ALTNAHARRA, DURNESS, EDDRACHILLIS, SCOURIE, GLENDUCE, LOCH-
BERVIE, FARR, STRATHY, ARMADALE, LAIRG, TONGUE, ACHANY, MELVICH, LOCHINVER, BETTY HILL,
STOER AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
ASSYNT is a large parish, on the Mincb Channel, between Kyle
Situ and Loch Enard, 20 miles Vf.TH.~w. of Lairg, with an acreage
of 110,111, chiefly mountain and water. Loch Assynt in this pariah
is seven miles in length and one in breadth; there are also several
Biualler lochs. Slate, spat and marble are found in tbo parish.
Population of the parish in 1881, 2,781.
Altnaharra is a village in Mid-Sutherland, 17 miles s. of Tongue,
with a Free church and school.
Durness is a parish in north-west Sutherland, situated between
Whitehead and Cape Wrath light ; its size is in length 15 miles, in
breadth 18 miles, principally hilly pasture. Lime is quarried here.
The noted cave of Smoo is about a mile from Durness Inn. Acreage,
140,812. In 1881 the population was 987.
Eddrachillis (or Edderachylis) is a parish on the coast of west
Sutherland, and contains the villages of Scourie, Glenduce and
Lochbervie. The parish is situated between Sandwood Bay and
Kyle Sku, its length being 20 miles, with a breadth of 10 miles ; it
is watered by Lochs More aud Stack, and several smaller lakes.
Acreage of the parish, 135,555. Population in 1881, 1,525.
Farr is a large mountainous parish in North Sutherland, 20 miles
n.w. of Kildonan, and on the east coast between Farr Head and
Stracby Head, and contains the villages of Strathy aud Armadale.
In size the parish is 80 miles long by a breadth of about 14 miles

and embraces an area of 188,355 acres. The parish in 1881 possessed
a population of 1,930.
Lairg is a parish 22 miles n.w. of Dornoch, in South Sutherland,
under Bon Clybric, and includes Loch Shin and other lakes. The
sizo of the parish is 30 miles in length by a breadth of about 10
miles. A branch of the Caledonian Bank is established in tho
village. It has a commodious hotel, called the Sutherland Arms
Hotel, where every comfort will be found. Acreage of the parish
121,358. Population iu 1881, 1,355. '
Tongue is a parish in North Sutherland, 42 miles n.n.w. of Dor-
noch, situated od the Kyje of Tongue, an arm of the sea nine miles
long. The parish, which is 18 miles in length, by a breadth of about
six miles, is watered by the rivers Borgie and Molness, together
with lochs Ullaboll, Laighal, Maddle, Slam, and many small lakes-
it is also very mountainous, Ben Haitig being 1,345 feet, Ben Hope
3,060 feet, and Laighal'2,508 feet above the sea level. There is a
most comfortable hotel at Tongue. Tho pariah has an area of 81 306
acres, and in 1881 contained a population of 1,929.
Achany is two miles south of Loch Shin, iu South Sutherland.
Melvich is a village in the parish of Reay, North Sutherland
three miles east of Strathy.
Lochinver is near Inverloch, West Sutherland.
