A parish church is atrBanton, and
tween 12 and 13 n. from Glasgow, nearly 12 w. by s. from Falkirli
and 4 from Cumbernauld ; situated on the main road leading to the
three first- named places. It is a straggling and irregularly built
place ; a considerable proportion of the inhabitants are employed in
weaving for Glasgow houses and resident mauufacturers. The
parish is abundantly stocked with coal and iron stone, vast quan-
tities of the latter being supplied to the Carron Iron Works, near
Falkirk, and to Gartsherrie and Langloau, near Coatbridge. The
district is about seven miles in length, and three and a half iu
breadth. In form the parish is an irregular oblony, bounded by St.
Niuians and Fintry on the north, Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch on
the south, Denny on the east, and Campsie on the west. It is
watered by the Carron and Kelvin rivers ; it also contains one of
the reservoirs of the Forth and Clvde Canal. In 1637 near the ,
village of Kilsyth, the Covenanters, commanded by General Baillie, i miles south-west from Denny,
