KILLEARN.
KILLEARN, is a village in the parish of its name, 50 miles w. from
Edinburgh, 20 s.s.w. from Stirling, and nearly 17 n.w. from
Glasgow, situate on the river Endrick, almost in the centre of the
district, and in a pleasant part of the country. The parish is 12
miles long by an average breadth of 2% miles, the river, with the
parish of Balfron, forming its northern boundary. It is bounded on
the east by Fintry, on the south by Strathblanc, and on the west by
Drymen. Gentlemen's seats and pleasure grounds abound through-
out the parish ; and these, with the surrounding highly picturesque
scenery, render the aspect of tho locality most agreeable. Consider-
able interest is also attached to this part of the county as having
been the birthplace or residence of men eminent in the biography
of Scotland. In its more secluded recesses Sir William Wallace was
known to have occasionally found a retreat. It has an additional
claim to tho attention of the literary world from being indisputably
the birthplace of George Buchanan, tho celebrated poet and his-
torian, whose name is deservedly famous all over Europe. Ho was
horn at a place called the Moss, a small farmhouse on the banks of
the Water of Blane, about two miles from tho village of Killearn ;
the farm was the property of the distinguished author's father, and
was for a long period possessed by persons of the name of Buchanan.
A beautiful monument of white freestone was erected in the village,
by the gentlemen of the parish and neighbourhood, in honour of tho
memory of their eminently gifted countryman. It is a well-propor-
tioned obelisk, 19 feet square at the base, and 103 feet in height
above the ground. Th e of its erection was defrayed by vol-
untary subscription, and it has reo utly been »*. novated and enclosed
by iron railings, and the ground round about improved. The village
within the last two years has been furnished with a supply of water
by Alexander Buchanan, Esq. at a cost of 6800. The church, a very
handsone structure, was built bj Vrchibald Orr sq.M.p.of
Ballikifirain, as a memorial church in memory of Ms deceased
daughter, at z cost of £8,000, and presented to the parish. The old
church is now used as a public hall. The laud of the parish is
fertile, ^ud is watered by the Endrick and the Blane. The minerals
in the district are chiefly limestone and freestone, and beautiful
specimens of jasper are occasionally met with among the fragments
of basaltic columns which abound here. Tho wood.-; produce great
numbers of indigenous plants. Acreage of the parish, 15,370. Popu-
lation in 18S1, 1,131 ; of tho village, 856.
