SLATER'S FALKIRK DIRECTORY
Redding is a district situated in the parish of Polmount, abound-
ing in coal mines, all of which are worked by the Redding Coal
Company ; there are two schools and a chapel for Methodists.
Nobel's Explosives Co., Limited, have large works here for the
manufacture of detonators for their dynamite. The company also
make vitriol and other chemicals on a large scale. Population in
1881, 620.
Slamannan parish lies on the south bank of the Avon, about
seven miles from Falkirk, extending along the margin of that river
for about five miles, and from three to four in breadth. On the
southern boundary of the district is a small lake called Black Loch,
which is a tributary to the great reservoir for the Clyde Canal.
Near the north-west end of the parish there is a point where the
three shires of Stirling, Dumbarton, and Lanark meet, and at the
south-west end of the sbires of Stirling and Lanark meet with the
shire of Linlithgow. The Bank of Scotland has a branch here.
Acreage of the parish, 7,062. Population in 1881, 5,850 of the
village, 1,644.
