BOTHWELL & UDDINGSTON,
WITH THE
BOTHWELL is an ancient village, in the parish of its name, sit-
uate on the road from Glasgow to Hamilton, between eight and
nine miles from the former, and between two and three from the
latter town. The Caledonian and North British railways each havo
a station here. The parish is about eight miles and a half long by
four broad ; the great roads from Edinburgh to Glasgow, and from
Glasgow to Carlisle, pass through it; and beside the river Clyde, it
is intersected by the two Calders, which are beautifully skirted
with wood. Throughout the parish coal iB found in abundance, and
Beveral collieries are in full operation. Near the village, towards
the west, on the side of the Clyde, is the modern mansion of Baron
Douglas of Douglas and Earl of Home, standing in the midst of
Shrubberies and plantations ; contiguous to which, on an eminence,
is the magnificent ruin of Bothwell Castle, once an important
Scottish fortress, much admired by all visitors. About half a mile
from the town is the Glasgow District Asylum, formerly con-
ducted as a private asylum under Dr. Dean Fairless. The institu-
tion was bought by the Glasgow District Board of Lunacy in 1878,
and after undergoing extensive alterations, was opened in 1881, as
a district asylum for pauper patients ; it contains over two hun-
dred beds. The road to Hamilton is carried over the Clyde by
means of Bothwell Bridge, a name famous in Scottish history from
this being the spot on which the Duke of Monmouth routed a
HAMLET OF FALLSLDE,
formidable army of Covenanters, on the 22ad of June, 1679. The
ancient church of Bothwell was founded by Archibald " The Grim,"
Earl of Douglas, in 1898, with liberal endowment for a provost and
eight prebendaries. An elegant church was erected by the heritors
of this parish ; it is in the Gothic style, and exhibits a fine appear-
ance as seen on approaching the village from Hamilton. There is
a branch of the the Clydesdale Banking Co. Limited, here, and a
board school and a private academy. The area of Bothwell parish
is 13,044 acres, and its population in 1881 was 25,4G6, of which num-
ber Bothwell village contained 1,520.
Hddingston is a thriving village in the parish of Bothwell, four
miles north-west from Hamilton. The road from Glasgow to Car-
lisle passes through the village ; and it has a station on the Cale-
donian and also one on the North British Railway. There are iron
foundries and establishments for the manufacture of agricultural
implements. The village is lighted with gas, and presents an
appearance of neatness and good order. The places of worship are
Established, Free and United Presbyterian churches, one of each.
There are also two public and two private schools, and a branoh of
the Bank of Scotland. Population in 1881, 8,542.
Fallside is a hamlet in the parish of Bothwell, about one mile
north-east from and in the postal district of Bothwell village, and
has a station on the Caledonian Railway.
