AUCHTERHOUSE,
WITH LUNDIE, FOWLIS EASTER, AND TEALING.
THE parish of Auchterhouse lies in the south-west corner of the
county, about seven miles n.w. from Dundee, its post town, and
on the south of the Sidlaw hills, bounded on the east by Tealing,
on the south-east by Mains and Stratbmartine, and on the south by
Liff, on the west and south-west by Lundio and Eowlis, on the
north-west by Newtyle, and on the north and north-east by Glamis,
and is a station on the Dundee and Newtyle railway. There is a
parish church (erected in 1775), also a Board school. The road
from Dundee to Meigle (in Perthshire) passes through the parish,
which comprises 5.70S acres, chiefly of arable laud. Sandstone rock
lies at or near the surface of almost the whole exten^oXlh^parish.
The parish of Auchterhouse contained a populatioil'nTl^loiTjSrr'
Lundie parish lies m the western part of the county, and at the
head of the vail ey of the Dighty, bounded on the north by the Sidlaw
hills, which divide it from Kettins and Newtyle, on the east by
Auchterhouse, and on the south and west by Fowlis Easter;
Admiral Lord Viscount Duncan, whose name is familiar to every
reader of British history, lies interred in the churchyard of this
parish. The parish of Fowlis Easter, in Perthshire, was united to
Lundie ecclesiastically in 1018, but parochially is a separate parish;
its length is about 3 miles, and its breadth 1J£ miles, commanding a
beautiful view of the Carse of Gowrie, near the eastern extremity of
which it lies, the Frith of Tay, and the opposite shores of Fife. In ,
point of situation, and for natural beauty, and rioh and varied
scenery in every direction, few places can excel it. Conjointly the
district forms a well-cultivated and productive tract of country,
embellished with plantations and irrigated by several small lakes,
of which Lundie Loch is one. The church of Fowlis, which was
founded by Sir Andrew Gray, for a provost and some prebendaries,
is still perfectly entire, although it was built in the year 1143. The
parish, which comprises 7,012 acres, abounds in grey freestone of
good quality, and iu 1881 had a population of 628.
Tealing parish, situated five miles north from Dundee, its post
town, and lying on the south side of the Sidlaw chain, is about six
miles in length and three in breadth ; it is watered by tho small
river Fithie, a tributary stream to the Dighty, which separates it
from the united parish of Mains and Strathmartiue on the south,
and is bounded on the east and west by Murroes and Anchterhouso,
and a line drawn nearly along tho summits of the hills above
mentioned would divide the parish from Glamis on the north. In
this parish are found grey slate, moorstone, and freestone. John
Glass, founder of the sect appropriately designated " Glassites,"
was minister of Tealing anterior to his open separation from the
Church of Scotland. The places of worship are the parish and a
Free church, and there is also a Board school. Acreage of parish,
7,227 ; population in 1881, 757.
