arches, some of which may be passed through in boats and others
on foot ; they are a great attraction, and much visited. The stream
of the Brothock flows through the parish and passes through the
town of Arbroath, entering the sea at its harbour. The parish of St.
Vigeans encloses an area of 12,731 acres, and in 1871 had a population
of 12,805, and in 1881, 14,982.
Arbirlot parish is contiguous to that of St. Vigeans at Arbroath
ou the north, and bounded on the south-east by the German Ocean,
extending four milos in length by three in breadth. The village is
about three miles west of Arbroath, situated on the east bank of the
Elliot stream, from whence the name is dei-ivod, which was formerly
Ahcr-elliot. Along the sea-coast the land is sandy; inland the soil
is a rich loam, capable of producing varions erops. About a quartet
of a mile south-west of the village stands Kelly Castle, which origin-
ally belonged to the family of Auchterlony, and now to the Earl of
Dalhousie. Arbirlot contains an Established church and manse, a
Free church and manse, which was erected several years ago, at a
cost of about .-£1,300, and a public school. Acreage, 6,747 ; population
in 1871, 919, and in 1881, 822.
