NEWPORT,
WITH FORGAN, BALMERINO, AND GAULDRY.
TVTEWPORT, a handsome village in the parish of Forgan, stretch-
1\ ing along the river side, is picturesquely situated, directly
opposite to Dundee, about two miles therefrom, and three miles
s.w. from Tayport, the ground sloping upwards to a considerable
height from the river frontage. Many elegant villas have been
erected in it; and as there is constant communication with Pun-
dee by means of the steamers, which ply hourly, and the climate
being salubrious and comparatively mild, it is fast becoming a
popular suburb of Dundee. Newport possesses four handsome
churches, a commodious public ball, erected at a cost of £4,000, and
a Board school, built in 1878, to accommodate upwards of 400
scholars. The railway, which was made to connect Tayport with the
Tay bridge, passes through Newport and has a station here. The
south end of the Tay bridge is at Wormit, abont a mile to the west
of Newport. The new bridge now in course of erection, is close to
the former one. Population of Newport in 1881, 2,311.
Forgan parish extends for about four miles in length and about
tw and a half miles in breadth, along the south bank of the river
Tay, exactly opposite the town of Dundee, and comprises 4,983
acres. It is bounded by Ferry-Port-on-Craig on the east, Balmerino
on the west, and Leuchars and Kilmany on the south. The parish
church of Forgan is nearly two miles inland, being ten miles from
Cnpar and the same distance from St. Andrews. There is also a
Board school. The landward part of the parish is richly wooded and
Tvell cultivated. The mansion house of St. Fort, at present uniu-

habited, standing out conspicuously in the landscape, is in this
parish ; and about one mile west from Newport is the small harbour
of Woodhaven. Population of the parish in 1SS1, 3,303.
Balmerino, or Balmcrinoch (pronounced Ba'mcrnie), is a parish
lving on the south bank of the river Tay, from 5^ to 6 miles from
Newport, extending about three and a half miles in length and two
and a half in breadth. The surface is'a gradual decline to the side of
the river. The harbour of balmerino is small, though at one time a
considerable quantity of grain was exported from it, but this trade
has now declined. The kirk anil little hamlet lie on the road along
the low ground from the Ferry to Newburgh ; and there is a Free
church at Gauldry. To the west, and on a slip of ground intruding
upon the waters of the Tay, stands the ancient village of Balmerino,
adjacent to which are the ruins of the once famed abbey, a beautiful
structure, begun by Alexander II. and his mother, Emergarde,
daughter of the Earl of Beaumont, in 1229. These ruins, which are
richly clothed with ivy and surrounded with some fine tall trees,
are much admired by strangers. The nearest railway station is at
Newport. Acreage, 8,431. Population in 1881, 664.
Gauldry, a small village in the above parish, is about 3 miles
inland from Newport. Here is a Board school. The aspect of the
country is of an undulatingcharacter, and agricultural. Thenearest
railway station is at Newport.
Kirkton is a small hamlet in the parish of Balmerino.
