vation, enclosure, and plantation, and must be ranked. among the
most beautiful parts of the shire; it is traversed by the streams of the
Leven and the Or, and the great road through the county crosses it.
The Edinburgh, Perth, and Dundee Railway is carried over the first
named river by means of a handsome viaduct of ten arches, nearly
ninety feet in height. Balgonie Castle, the property of the late Charles
Balfour, Esq., of Newton Don, is a edifice of great antiquity and
strength ; it stands on the south bank of the Leven, in the midst of
some finely wooded grounds. About half a mile to the east is the seat
of Charles Bethune, Esq., now in the occupation of Sir John Morris,
surrounded by x^leasing plantations and enclosures, and hi a delightful
situation. Balbimie is a good substantial mansion, the seat of John
Balfour, Esq., and lies about half a mile north-west of the village.
There have just been built a spacious town hall and a good school. The
village, altogether, has of late years undergone great improvement. A
fair is held in July. The village of Windygates, now the head of a
.post district, in this parish, stands on the high road between Markinch
and Leven, about two miles west from the latter. Contiguous to the
village is the extensive distillery of The Distillers' Company, Limited ;
also the flax spinning mills of Messrs. G. & W. Beveridge, and the
bleach works of the Haugh Bleaching Co. Close to Windygates is
Cameron Bridge, a station on the Leven and East of Fife Railway.

MARKINCH is a parish containing the village of its own
name, and Thornton, Windygatps, Milton of Balgonie,
Coalton of Balgonie, Woodside, Inner Leven, and Balcurvxe.
Markinch is a station on the Edinburgh, Perth, and Dundee section of
the North British Railway, and is situated near the centre of the parish,
at a distance of ten miles s. from Cupar, and eight n.e. from Kirkcaldy,
and between six and seven miles Jrom Leven. It occupies an open
situation on a piece of irregular rising ground, and on the highest
part is seated the church. A braneh line of railway from the Edin-
burgh, Perth, and Dundee line connects this place with Leslie.
Flax spinning and the weaving of linen are extensively carried on
here; there are also paper and corn mills, a woollen manufactory, and
bleach fields. The district round abounds in coal, and in the village
there is a branch of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, Limited. The
places of worship are a church of the Establishment, a Free church,
and one for the United Presbyterians. The parish of Markinch,
which embraces 9,821 acres, is bounded by Kennoway on title
east, on the west by Dysart, Kinglassie, and Leslie ; on the north
by Falkland and Kettle; and on the south by Wemyss; it extends
from north to south five miles and a half, by a mean breadth of
two, its southern end being considerably wider. The parish has a
