KILCONQUHAR,
WITH BARNYARDS, EARLSFERRY, COLINSBURGH, AND ELIE.
THE parish of Kilconqdhak lies on the shore of the Firth of Forth
extending in an oblong form between seven and eight miles
from north to south, and varying from two to nearly five miles in
breadtb. It is bounded on the north by Ceres and Cameron, on the
south by Elm and the Firth of Forth, ou the east by Carnbee, and
on the west by Newburn and Largo. The East of Fife branch of
tdeftorth British Railway passes about half a mile west of the
village. The surface rises from the south, and tho soil varies
gradually as it recedes from the coast. The flat part of the south is
a sandy soil, the rest being all of an upland character. There aro
manj bemtiful seats in the parish, -of which Balcurres, the resi-

dence of Sir Coutts Lindsay, Bart., is the chief ; and there are other
elegant mansions also deserviug notice. Kilconquhar Loch is a
fine sheet of water, three-quarters of a mile in length, and nearly
the same in breadth, with two small islands, which harbour many
swans and wild fowls. This parish contains five villages, namely,
Kilconquhar, Barnyards, Colinsburgh, Largoward, and Earls-
ferry. The latter, which is a royal burgh, is on tho sea coast, one
mile and a half from Kilcouqubar, three from Colinsburgh, and
close to the village of Elie. The date of its erection into a royal
burgh is uncertain, as its earliest charter was destroyed by a lire iu
