DUNSCORE.
HOLYWOOD, IRONGRAY AND KIRKMAHOE.
T\UNSCORE, a parish in the district of Nithsdale, is bounded by
J / Glencarin aud Keir on the north, and Holywood and Kirkcudbright-
â– shire on the south; it is twelve miles in length, and its breadth varies
irom one to four miles, and contains about 14,815 acres. The hills
which surround it are healthy and good for pasture, aud one of them,
â– called Bogrie Hill, rises 1,200 feet above the level of the sea. The
â– celebrated John Welsh, son-in-law to John Knox, was a native of
Dunscore. The land is arable on the banks of the Nith, which irrigates
iits eastern part ; it is also intersected by the Cairn. Sheep and cattle
are reared off these lands for the southern markets ; and oats, barley,
•wheat, potatoes and turnips are produced in great quantities. The
parish church is about nine miles from Dumfries, and seven from
.Moniaive ; there are also in the parish a Free church and an United
Presbyterian church. Robert Burns at one time held a farm in this
parish, near the Nith, named Ellesland, and it was while here that he
had an opportunity of eulogising the Cluden river, which is a continua-
tion of the Cairn water. At this period he took charge of a village
library, instituted by his landlord, Robert Riddel, Esq. Population
in 1881,1,405.
Holywood parish, which is bounded by Dunscore on the north and
•west, extends for ten miles along the right bank of the Nith, its breadth
being from two to three miles ; its acreage is about 8,805. The district
• derives its name from a sacred grove, to which, it is said, the Druids
resorted to perform their rites. The temple of these pagans was suc-
ceeded by the cell of a hermit, which was subsequently changed into a
â–  house for monks of the Premonstratenses, in the beginning of the
.twelfth century, and the ruins of an old abbey in the churchyard are
isupposed to be the remains of that building. An Irish recluse, named
(.Congal, seems to have been the founder, and he bequeathed both to the
cell and the abbey the name of Dercongal, signifying " the Oakwood of
Congal," The church, an exceedingly neat erection aud much admired,
stands in a most delightful part of the country, about three miles from
Dumfries. In 1881 the parish contained a population of 1,496.
Irongray, one of the most picturesque parishes in the south of
Scotland, is situated in the stewartry of Kirkcudbright, a few miles
north-west of the town of Dumfries, and is bounded on the north by
the river Cairn or Cluden, where it separates it from the parish of
Holywood, in Dumfries-shire, on the east by Terregles, on the west by
Kirkpatrick-Durham and Urr, and on the south by Lochruthon and
Terregles ; its surface is diversified and irregular, and its outline nearly
triangular, its area comprising 13,675 acres. In the churchyard there
is a monument erected by Sir Walter Scott, to the memory of Helen
Walker, the prototype of Jeanie Deans, the heroine in the " Heart of
Midlothian," who was a native of this parish, and whose remains are
interred here. The monument is of Craigleth sandstone, and is in the
form of a sarcophagus. In 1881, the parish contained a population
of 784.
Kirkmahoe is a small modern village in the parish of its name, and
district of Nithsdale, bounded by Closeburn, Kirkmichael, Tinwald,
Dumfries, Holywood, Dunscore and Keir ; it is four miles from Dumfries,
situate on a rivulet tributary to the Nith, near the southern extremity
of the parish. From some of the summits of its uplands a beautiful
view is obtained of the pretty valley of the Nith, fringed in the distance
by the Solway tide, and in the far back ground by Criffel and the Cum-
berland mountains. Tho church is a handsome Gothic edifice. The
lands of the parish are well cultivated, and there are several plantations.
Its acreage is about 12,553, and in 1881 it had a population of 1,250.
