To ALLOA, John Drysdale, from Alva, daily
CLACKMANNAN,
THE capital of the county and parish of that name, though not
now entitled to that rank from either its size, population or
commercial importance, was at one period a town of some conse-
quence; but since the improvement of Alloa, and the superior
facilities for commerce possessed by that place, it has sunk into
comparitivo insignificance. The name is believed to be derived
from the Gaelic word Clack, signifying the kirk town, and annan the
name of the lords of Annandale. It is 32 miles n.w. from Edinburgh,
aud two miles from Alloa, pleasantly situated on an eminence
gently rising to the height of nearly two hundred feet above the
level of the Forth. The surrounding scenery is very delightful, and
is viewed to great advantage from Clackmannan Tower ,which occu-
pies a commanding site a little west of the town. Tradition states
that this tower was built by King Robert Bruce, close to which he
had his palace, not a vestige of which latter now remains. The
tower is eighty feet high, and contains a variety of apartments,
reached by means of a spiral staircase. The sword and helmet of
the illustrious Bruce were formerly kept in the tower, but in 179G
they were bequeathed to the late Earl of Elgin by the widow of
Heury Bruce of Clackmannan, and are now preserved at Broomhall,
Fifeshire. This venerable lady, who was a devoted adherent of the
Stewart's, with the sword of King Robert in her hands, was wont to
assume the privilege of conferring knighthood, and when Bruce the
bard visited her he was honoured in this way, the old lady observing
that " she had a better right to make knights than some folks." She
died at the advanced age of 95 years. In the centre of the town is a
square tower aud a portion of the west gablo of an old building,
â– which was formerly the county court-houso and gaol; it was fast
going to ruin, but in 1865 was restored and furnished with a new
clock having transparent dials, and. through the liberality of the
late Francis Horne, Esq, is now an ornament to the town. Close to
the tower is the market cross, which, although a relic of bygone
days, is in a good state of preservation. Mention may also bo made
of a whinstone, which is to be seen at the Cross, upon which the
king is represented to have frequently sat. To save this stone from
spoliation of virtuosos, a number of gentlemen were at the expense
of elevating it on the top of a stone pillar ten or twelve feet high.
The principal trade of Clackmannan is that derived from the coal
mines, which supply employment and humble competence to many
of the industrious classes ; and at Kilbagie, a short distance from
the town, there is a works established for the making of pulp from
esparto grass, and which now also manufactures paper. A large
woollen factory, employing about two hundred hands, has been
erected near the river Devon by Messrs. John Paton, Son & Co. of
Alloa. Tun and vat building is carried on here. The soil of the
parish in the carse is considered the richest arable in the shire, and
under the best state of cultivation. Kennet House, the residence of
Lord Balfour of Burleigh, is a short distance east from Clack-
mannan, and is a fine modern mansion, occupying a beautiful and
commanding site. There are two ports, one at Clackmannan and
the other at Kennetpans, where coals are extensively shipped.
The places of worship are the parish church, a Free church, and one
for United Presbyterians. The first mentioned, erected in 1814, at
an expense of £4,500, is a spacious and handsome structure, equal
to the accommodation of 2,000 persons. There are rive public
schools in the parish, with an average attendance of 800 children.
Acreage, 9,427- Population of the parish in 1S81, 4,518; of the town,
1,501.
