LACKMANN ANSHIRE
ALVA
SLATER'S
from the summit of this mountain is very grand and extensive. The
hills to the northward are said to contain various kinds of minerals, and
about a century ago a copper mine here was wrought by a London com-
pany; the metal sold at £50 per ton, but from the thinness of the
seams the works were abandoned as unprofitable. The principal
antiquities are the ruins of a circular building on a steep and rugged
basaltic eminence which rises to the north of the town, and the remains
of a Druidical circle on the south end of a rising ground lying to the
east of it, called Cuninghar. In 1862, two urns, each about 18 inches in
diameter, and the same in height, containing human bones, were
found in making excavations about 150 yards from this circle. The
places of worship are a church of the Establishment, a Free church, an
United Presbyterian church, one belonging to a congregation of the
Evangelical Union, and one for the Congrcgatiunalists, the latter
erected in 1876, at a cost of about .£3,000. The parish
church is almost a square building, situated on rising ground at
the east end of the town ; it is in the Gothic style of architecture, the
buttresses terminating in lofty and tastefully carved finials. Handsome
Board schools were erected in the centre of the High street in 1875, at a
cost of about £3,000. Coalsnaughton is a small hamlet in the parish
of and about a mile from Tillicoultry, where there are Board schools
and a Mission church. The parish of Tillicoultry embraces an area of
6,9-16 acres, and in 1SS1 had a population of 5,344, "the burgh containing
8,732.
