KIRKMICHAEL AND DALRYMPLE,
WITH THE VILLAGE OF CROSS-HILL.
KIRKMICHAEL Is a small village and parish, containing 15,930
acres ,in the district of Carrick. The village is 76 miles s.w. from
Edinburgh, 22 s. from Kilmarnock, 10 s. of Ayr, the same distance e.
of Dalmellington, SN.E.of Dailly, 4 w. by n. from Straiton, and 3iE.
from Maybole, pleasantly situatedin a valley, on the road from New-
ton SteWart to Glasgow, 36 miles from the former, and 44 from the
latter. The general surface of this parish is hilly, towards the south
and east mountainous and rocky; but the whole is more or loss
cultivated. The Girvan runs through the parish ; the Doon is its
boundary for several miles, and the Dyrock water flows through the
village, which latter derives its name from a church that formerly
stood here, dedicated to St. Michael ; the present religious structure,
which is neat and commodious, was built in 1787, on its site. In
the churchyard is tbe tomb of Gilbert M'Adam, who was shot in
1685, by the laird of Culzean and Ballochmyle, for his adherence to
the covenanters. The annual fair is held on the Friday before the
last Wednesday in September. The Board school was built in 1875,
. at a cost of £1,100, and accommodates 150 scholars. Population of
the parish in 1871, 2,254, and in 1831, 1,989; of the village, 343.
Cross-hill is a village in the above parish, on the left bank of the
Girvan, about two miles south of Kirkmichael, and is a quoad sacra
parish in itself for church and school purposes. There is an Estab-
lished and Free church here, and also a Board school. Population
in 1871,835, and in 1881, 740.
Dalrymple is a small village and parish in the district of Kyle,
pleasantly situated on the banks of the Doon, 4 miles n. from Kirk-
michael. The parish, which is about eight miles at its extremo
length, and three in breadth, contains 7,833 acres, and comprises
some beautiful undulating and flat land, mostly arable. In the
eastern portion of the parish are several coal and ironstone pits,
which are wrought by the Dalmellington Iron Company. The name
Dalrymple is said to be derived from Dalrymole, signifying 'â–  tho
dale in which tbe king was slain," and it is supposed that Coilus, a
king of the Britons, was killed in battlo in this place ; its Gaelic
name, however, was ^Dail-a-Chruim-Pitili, or " dale of the crooke I
pool." Near the Roman road, which intersects the parish, was found
in a moss a vessel of Roman bronze, by antiquarians conjectured to
be of that kind used by the priests in their sacrificial oblations ; and
in 1834 was discovered, near tho same spot, an ancient vase ; both
these relics are in the possession of the Rev. John Wallace, tho
minister of Dalrymple. In the parish are three British fortlets, on
commanding sites, and the ruins of threo castles ; these with the
beautiful loch of Martnaham, the waters of which are covered
annually with the yellow and white water lily, are objects of consider-
able interest and curiosity to the visitor to this district- The Estab-
lished and Free churches are the places of worship, and there is a
new stone school and scbool house, .built by tho School Board in
1875, at a cost of upwards of £1,500, to accommodate 150 scholars.
In 1871 the population of the parish was 1,412, and in 1881,1,302 ;
of which 316 belong to tho village.
