NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY OP GLASGOW.
Instituted 1831.
For the pnrposo of encouraging the pursuit of Natural History in
all its branches, and fostering a love of the- sciences, by meetings for
the exhibition of specimens, both native and foreign, tho readiug
of communications, and excursions for mutual improvement. Can-
didates for membership are recommended by three members of tho
Society. The society meets on tho last Tuesday of every month,

GLASGOW NORTH BRITON'S FRIENDLY SOCIETY.
Instituted 1S23.
This society has for its object the relief of its members, who may
be incapable of attending to business through sickness, &c. and
for securing at death a payment for Funeral Expenses. The society
has a large capital, securely invested. The meetings of tho society
are held in tho Religious Institution Rooms.

PERTHSHIRE CHARITABLE SOCIETY.
Instituted, 22 December, 1835.
The principal object of this society, the qualification for member-
ship of which consists of a small sum of entry money, is to afford
relief to persons in indigent circumstances, natives' or widows of
natives, of Perthshire, and their children, resident in Glasgow and
the neighbourhood ; or to natives of the county passing through the
city unexpectedly falling into distress.

GLASGOW BRANCH OF THE BOATMEN'S MISSION IN
CONNECTION WITH THE SEAMEN AND BOATMEN'S
FRIEND SOCIETY.
Established 1846.
To promote the social, moral, and religious welfare of seamen and
canal boatmen. Tho means employed are — preaching the gospel in
their Bethels and in tho open air ; "the promotion of day, evening,
and sabbath schools ; the establishment of mothers' meetings,
penny banks, and temperance societies; the circulation of bo.iks,
tracts, copies of scriptures, and general visitation. This society
employs thirteen missionaries, three day school teachers, and oc
cupies eight stations, and in connection therewith Sabbath schools.

This society was instituted in tho year 1725, for tho relief of aged
and indigent persons, and for the education of destitute children of
the name of Buchauau, or of any of the reputed septs of tho clan.
The directors further make considerable educational grants to young
talented persons of the clan who are desirous of following academical
pursuits.

The objects of this society are (1) the preservation of the language,
literature, music, poetry, dress, antiquities, and athletic games of
the High'aidirs of Scotlaud ; (2) to found bursariesjor make annual
or other grants of money, in aid of diligent or distinguished stu-
dents, natives or sous of natives of the Highlands of Scotland ; and
(3) the affording temporary aid to deserving and destitute persons
from the Highlands in Glasgow. Tho society has upwards of 1,100
enrolled members.

This society was instituteJ in 1785, aud now possesses a capital
of £1,684 odds. Its members, who must be those connected bv
birth, parentage, or marriage with one of tho Upper Ward o"f
Lanarkshire parishes, or havo resided therein for ten years are
entitled to 8s. per week when confined to bed; 5s. per week when
unable to attend their employment; andSs. per week when super-
annuated. After being on the roll of members for seven years these
amount? are increased to 10s. (id., 7s. Gd., and 3f. 6d. weekly respec-
tively; and ihe money so bestowed Jast year amounted to £180
10s. 7d. Tho entry money is 10s. 6d. aud the quarterly payments
range from 2s. Id. at 15, to 3s. 2d. at 45 years of age.
