upwards, sueli persons being not under tbe age of sixty-hve years.
Said annuities may, undor certain circumstances, bo increased
until tbe same shall amount to £8.

THE SOCIETY OF DEACONS AND FREE PRESES.
This society was instuted in 1780. Its object is to afford pecu-
niary aid to such of its members or their widows as may be in
destitute circumstances. Any person approved of by the directors
of tbe Society is qualitied for membership. Tho entry money of
sons and sons-in-law of members is £1 Is., and of strangers £2 2s.

Instituted 12th December, 1833.
Has for its object the universal abolition of slavery and the slave
trade ; the protection of tbe rights of the aborigines in tbe British
Colonies ; and the improvement of the condition of our fellow-
subjects— the natives of British India.

GLASGOW WATER OF ENDRICK FRIENDLY SOCIETY.
This societywas instituted on the 29th of March, 1771, and has for
its object the relief of its members, who may be rendered incapable
of attending to business by disease, accident, inlirmity or old age,
and for securing a payment at death for funeral expenses.
Meetings are held in tho Religious Institution Rooms, 172
Buchanan St. on the first Thursday of March, June, September and
December, for payment of accounts and admitting members, and on
the first Thursday of February for electiou of office bearers, &c.

GTASGOW AND MEARNS (FORFARSHIRE AND KINCAR-
DINESHIRE) BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
Its object is to afford temporary relief to natives and widows of
natives and their families who have fallen into distress, resident in
or near Glasgow. It has two bursaries at Glasgow University,
value £15 ft year, tenable for four years, for the arts classes, open
to natives and sons of natives. A contribution of £3 3s. constitutes
membership, payable either at entry or in three annual instalments
of £1 Is.

This is a charitable society— I. For the relief of persons in reduced
or destitute circumstances, but not receiving parochial relief, in the
order of precedence following :— (1) Members of the society ; (2) the
widows, sisters, brothers, or descendants of members; (3) natives
of Ayrshire resident in Glasgow. II. For the education of children
resident in Glasgow of existing or deceased members, or of children
themselves natives, or children of natives of Ayrshire ; and ID.. For
assisting by bursaries voung men wishing to pursue their studies in
the University of Gla'sgow, who are either descendants of mem-
bers, or natives of Ayrshire, or sons of natives resident in Glasgow.
All persons may become members who are natives of Ayrshire, or
have an interest in tho county by property, business, or residence,,
or are connected by marriage or relationship with members, or with
persons qualified to bo members. Entry money £3 3s., and no
further payment is required.

The members of this Benevolent Association must bear the name
of Brown, or be connected with porsons of that name, as Husbands,
or Sons, or Sons-in-law, or Grandsons. The annual produce of the
capital stock, or such part of said prodnco shall, from time to time,
be appliod towards relieving necessitous members of this society, or
their widows or children ; and so far as the funds permit, may be
employed in placing children of indigent members at trades or
schools, or inlcoutributiug towards these purposes, at tbe discretion
of the managers.

CITY OF GLASGOW NATIVE BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.
Its object is to afford assistance to natives and widows, and
families of natives, of the city of Glasgow, who from reverses of
fortune, or otherwise, have been reduced to necessitous circum-
stances. A payment of £5 5s. either in one sum at entry or by five
successive yearly instalments of £1 Is. constitutes-membership.

SCOTCH EPISCOPAL CHURCH SOCIETY.
Tbe Diocesan Council of Glasgow and Galloway, consisting of
tbo Bishop, all tbe clergy instituted or licensed in the diocese, the
chancellor, auditor, and registrar of tlie diocese, and a lay represen-
tative from each incumbenc) and licensed mission elected by the
congregation, co-operates locally with the representative Church
Council.

'INDEPENDENT ORDER OF GOOD TEMPLARS— GRAND
LODGE OF SCOTLAND.
* OBJECTS.
Total abstinenco from all intoxicating liquors as a beverage, and
tho absolute prohibition of tbe manufacture, importation, and sale
of intoxicating liquors to be used as a beverage.
No person can be admitted to membership in this Order, unless he
believes of the existance of Almighty God as tbe Ruler and
Governor of all things, and is willing to take the pledge for life.
Under this rule all classes are welcomed.
There are 800 adult lodges in Scotland, with a membership of
50 000, and 850 juvenile lodges, with 20,000 members. Each lodge
meets weekly for the transaction of business and tho initiation of
new inombers. The Order is sustained by the weekly contribu-
tions of its members. A regular staff of agents are employed, who
address meetings throughout the country.

object is the discussion and elucidation of disputed and undecided
questions in law and speculative questions, with which is combined
the preparation of essays on snbjects of a legal and literary
character.
