MACFABLANE'S SCHOOL,
Surrey Street, Gorbals.
Founded by the late Mrs. Waddell, of Stone-field, for the purpose of
founding and maintaining a school in the Barony of Little Govan or
Gorbals, for teaching a competent number of girls reading, writing,
sewing, and the principles of religion. Tbe patronage and management
of said school were vested in the testator's trustees, and after their resig-
nation or decease, in the Minister and three Elders of the parish of
Gorbals, with the Magistrates of Gorbals. Since the extension of the
municipality the three senior Bailies of Glasgow have been appointed hi
room of the Magistrates of Gorbals, with the Minister and three Elders
of the parish. Number of girls taught is about 60. Applicants for ad-
mission must be eight and under nine, but no children whose parents or
guardians receive parochial relief can be admitted. Those named Mac-
farlaue have a preference.

THE M'LACHLAN FREE SCHOOL,

Established under the will and testament of the late JohnM'Lachlan,
of Calcutta, dated 20th August, 1819, for the education of the male and
female children of poor Highlanders residing in and about Glasgow.
The education given to the boys consists of reading, writing, arithmetic,
.English grammar, geography and writing from dictation ; and to girls
reading, spelling, writing, arithmetic, grammar, geography, sewing and
knitting. Average attendance of scholars — Boys, 111 ; girls, 102.

This bequest of the late James Murdoch, jun., merchant in Glasgow,
dated 19th May, 1823, was made for the maintenance of a school for
boys, for reading, writing, and arithmetic. Schools are supported under
this bequest, one of them in Rotten row, under an arrangement with the
Industrial School Society, by which that society provides food, fuel, &c.
The other schools are situated in St. Andrew's square and Springburn,
the average attendance at these being about 390.
THE MAXWELL SCHOOL.

Mrs. Blackhurst, late of Preston, left her means, consisting of thou-
sands of pounds, to found an institution in Glasgow, under the above
designation, for giving an education to poor children, vested in the
power of said trustees. Meanwhile, the Trust is at interest till a sufficient
sum accumulates.

LOGAN AND JOHNSTON SCHOOL,

Founded under the wills of the late William Logan and his spouse,
Mrs. Jean Johnston, or Logan, for the education, upbringing, and assist-
ing in life of poor or destitute step -children or orphans of Scottish ex-
traction , those bearing the names of Logan or Johnston always to be
preferred. One hundred and twenty girls receive a plain English edu-
cation, including reading, writing and arithmetic, and also sewing
and knitting. Each child receives one suit of clothing and two pairs
of shoes and stockings yearly, and is provided with some refreshment
in the forenoon of each day when attending school.

The Society was instituted in 1790 for tbe purpose of giving encourage-
ment to efforts for rescuing persons from drowning on tbe Clyde. An
officer U kept permanently stationed at the Society's house in the Green,
provided with proper apparatus for saving life and resuscitation. Tbe
Society gives rewards in money, and occasionally awards their medal, to
persons who have particularly distinguished themselves by their efforts
in saving human life.

Gratuitous advice to the poor afflicted with skin diseases on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays, at 2 o'clock p.m. In connection with the Dis-
pensary two wards for skin diseases are provided in the Western Lifirm-
arv, to which tbe directors have power to send the more serious cases.
A practical course for students is held during the months of May,
June and July each year. The Dispensary is entirely supported by
voluntary contributions.

This institution is designed for the necessitous and deserving of the
industrial classes who have been in illness, in order to give them the
benefit of the restorative influences of a short residence at the seaside
during the period of convalescence. Since the Homes were opened, ten
years ago, 14,584 patients have been restored to health. There is accom-
modation for 150 persons, and, added to a generous diet, there is
afforded the benefit of the best medical advice and medicines, as also the
use of superior hot and cold water baths. The Board of Management
earnestly appeal for annual subscriptions and donations, these being the
only source of revenue. It may be well to mention that each donor of
.£10, or annual subscriber of £1, is entitled to recommend one person
annually for admission to the Homes.
